How to Protect Your Children’s Teeth while Playing Sports

9/19/2016

Dr. Sabrina Magid-Katz of Advanced Dentistry of Westchester Shares Top Tips to Protect Your Children’s Teeth this Fall!
Picture
When it comes to playing sports, safety is the number one priority. Unfortunately, dental injuries are not uncommon when it comes to sports-related incidents. Here are our top tips to protect your children’s teeth during the back to school sports season.

Wear a mouth guard
The best way to prevent a dental injury is to wear a mouth guard. You don’t want your child’s teeth to be knocked out, broken or chipped. Before purchasing a mouth guard, talk with your dentist. Your dentist knows your child’s mouth the best. They know the appropriate suggestions for which mouth guard should be purchased. It is extremely important the mouth guard fits your child’s mouth properly. You do not want it to fall out while your child is on the field playing sports.

Maintain a healthy diet to build strong teeth and gums
By staying away from sugary snacks, you are building strong roots in your gums. When it comes to your child’s diet, limit soft drinks and sugary foods that promote tooth decay. Replace the candies, soda, and potato chips with fruits and vegetables. If your child does consume a sugary snack, the best thing they could do is drink water and brush their teeth. The water helps rinse away bacteria and brushing your teeth gives your child a good cleaning. The stronger your child’s teeth, the better protected they will be when playing a sport.

Take your child to the dentist twice a year
Taking your child to the dentist more than once a year might seem like a lot, but it is the easiest way to prevent any dental problems from forming. The dentist wants to keep your child’s teeth in tip-top shape. If any problems do occur, your dentist can fix it before it gets worse.

Encourage good hygiene at home
From a young age, you want to encourage good dental hygiene in your children. Keeping good hygiene at home includes: brushing your teeth twice a day or after every meal, flossing at least once a day, and changing your toothbrush every three months. Good hygiene will help make your children’s teeth strong and prevent any injuries from occurring.

As the Seasons Change So Does the Trend in Fashion

9/7/2016

As the seasons change so does the trend in fashion and we fashionistas and trendsetters make our mark on the style scene. What if we shifted our style pathology to fit a more practical 'no dress code'? A wardrobe trend where we incorporate styles that transcend any season; with the timelessness of lace, the longevity of polyester and oh cotton! the fabric of our lives; all woven with the stretch mechanism of Lycra, Spandex and Nylon which adds comfort and ease and yes, figure flattering.

Every woman loves to shop, after all a woman who looks good feels good; however being versatile & economical while doing such is retail therapy, diva style. The looks shown here are all transitional pieces that trends throughout each season and makes dressing effortless.

Making The Skirt Connection: aka the alternate dress, a little known secret even to the most seasoned fashionista. One skirt should produce 4 different looks aligning with all seasons; if your skirt isn't doing this, then you're not shopping wisely.

Why Sophia's Things?
Our 'Third Eye For Fashion' has been the staple of our business and our customers love the diversity in styles which allows for flexibility and versatility in moving from day to evening, from the office to an event, all the while making every woman revel the fashionista within. Our showroom styles are 6-8 pieces in quantity and once sold that style never gets reordered; so there's exclusivity in shopping at Sophia's Things. Our style repertoire include dresses for every occasion, tops and blouses that compliment your style taste and ensemble. Our accessories are unique and timeless, from fashion jewelry to semi precious stones and 18kt Gold filled Brazilian handmade jewelry. Our structured pieces are great for transitioning from the work to 'date night' or 'girls night out'.

While we love trend, at Sophia's Things we believe our pieces transcend this thus giving every shopper the assurance in knowing each style can be worn year in year out. We offer Concierge Services which is an in home experience, we bring the wine ?and the fashion and you give the orders. We're also introducing 'Style Tapas' a new and convenient way of shopping for those with busy and hectic schedules. We'll send you 6-8 styles from our showroom based on your styling preferences; if you keep all the styles you'll receive an automatic 10% discount and a store credit towards future in store purchases. We are excited to meet our new fashionistas as we welcome you to Sophia's Things and our 'no dress code' effect.

How Do You Know If Your Child Has ADHD?

9/6/2016

Picture
Typically, parents do not seemingly realize when certain ADHD symptoms are present in their child or adolescent. How can that be? We often see what we want to see, because to see the child or adolescent’s negative or inappropriate behavior is often too difficult to accept, nonetheless manage.

There has been so much talk lately about the overdiagnosis of ADHD. The fact that a child has a diagnosis or does not have a diagnosis does not matter to me. Instead, I look for persistent symptoms that interfere with (or as the new DSM states, impacts) the life of a child or adolescent with ADHD.

The operational word here is persistent. I am not talking about behaviors that the child exhibits once in a while, but rather, those that occur consistently over time. Some of the behaviors that parents should notice, as I state in my book, ADHD and Social Skills: A Step-by-Step-Guide for Teachers and Parents,  are the following, as adapted from the Conners Rating Scale:
  • Restless in the “squirmy” sense
  • Excitable, impulsive
  • Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities
  • Is an emotional child
  • Restless or overactive
  • Does not appear to listen to what is being said to him/her
  • Leaves seat in classroom or in other situations in which remaining seated is expected
  • Inattentive, easily distracted
  • Has difficulty waiting his turn
  • Does not know how to make friends
  • Fidgeting
  • Disturbs other children
  • Talks excessively
  • Runs about in situations where it is inappropriate
  • Has poor social skills
  • Fidgets with hands or feet
  • Demands must be met immediately—easily frustrated
  • Blurts out answers to questions before the questions have been completed
  • Interrupts or intrudes on others
  • Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
  • Restless, always up and on the go

If you have noticed any of these behaviors, please feel free to send me your questions about how to manage those behaviors.

Ready to Reclaim your Career? 8 Re-Entry Tips to Get you Back to Work

9/6/2016

Picture
We hear many stories of why women find themselves in the midst of a career break, ranging from the irresistible lure of motherhood, unexpected health issues, relocation, downsizing, to caring for elderly parents. People step out of their careers for many reasons, but few anticipate the struggles in re-entering the workforce. Regardless of the motivation for exiting or even re-entering the workforce, the struggle to get back in is universal.

Both my business partner, Anne-Barbara and I experienced this firsthand. I took time off from my career in management consulting to take care of my sons, while Anne-Barbara, an expat from the Netherlands, found herself in transition due to relocation.  We continue to hear from other moms on how overwhelming and isolating the re-entry process is.

So what did we do? We muddled through it, reconnected with contacts, read up on industry developments, and brushed up on technology changes.  What we realized is that there were new rules, redefining job search and career success.  Along the way, we discovered a few tips worth sharing:

Re-entry Tip 1: Be curious, share information, and collaborate with colleagues and employees.
The way we work has changed. Workplace dynamics have shifted where transparency and collaboration are valued over information hoarding and individual success.  Employers are looking for collaborators both in individual contributor and leadership roles.

Re-entry Tip 2: Dip your toes in the social pool and jump in.
A Linkedin profile is the bare minimum. You can go on from there to explore Twitter, Pinterest, Quora and other industry specific forums. Being “social” no longer means happy hour. You can no longer bury your head in the sand and avoid social media. Social media is here to stay and embracing it (even just for professional purposes) is critical in building your personal brand, establishing credibility, and expanding your network.

Re-entry Tip 3: Use the summary section of your resume to customize the resume for each job you apply for.
The way we look for jobs have changed. Long gone are the days of paper resumes on premium paper and cover letters. With 90% of resumes being submitted on-line, your shot at making a great first e-impression lies solely within the first few lines of your resume.

Re-entry Tip 4:  Customize your resume with keywords from the job description.
The way we tailor our resumes for jobs has changed. It is no longer effective to create a custom cover letter to submit along with your resume. It goes into the “e-slush pile.” With more and more companies using Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS,) your resume must make it through the electronic filter before it ever reaches human hands.

Re-entry Tip 5: Google yourself and make sure your search results reflect your professional identity.
The way employers vet potential candidates have changed. Often, after a 30-second resume scan, employers do their primary research. They go straight to Google, Facebook and LinkedIn. Any public information will form the next layer of your e-impression.  A professional LinkedIn profile, your profile picture, the number of connections, and recommendation you do (or don’t) have are deciding factors.

Re-entry Tip 6: Emphasize your inherent skill that you have honed over the years such as communication, professionalism, maturity, and emotional intelligence.
Being “older” can be an asset. With many baby boomers retiring, employers are looking for mature talent to take on leadership roles and adapt to working with the millennial workforce.  Our partner companies tell us they place value not only talent and functional skills, but also a portfolio of other “soft-skills.”

Re-entry Tip 7:  Our Talent 2.0 Program connects returning professionals with leading companies in the Westchester, Fairfield, and NY Counties.
Internships are not just for college kids. Facing tight labor supply and lack of diversity at leadership levels, companies are looking for unique ways to find talent. Many companies have in-house paid-returnship programs for returning career professionals. The successful completion of a paid “returnship” opportunities can lead to a permanent arrangement.

Re-entry Tip 8: Attend educational and networking events.
Our upcoming Career Re-Entry Roadshow is a great way to connect with other professionals. We will provide free information sessions on how we can help you jumpstart the next phase of your career.
9/12- Career Re-Entry Roadshow - Rivertowns (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY)
9/20- Career Re-Entry Roadshow - Pelham, NY
9/21- Career Re-Entry Roadshow - Pound Ridge, NY

Our Success Stories Panel Discussion features success stories from women who have returned to work after a career break to inspire you and help you get started.

About Vermilion Talent
Vermilion Talent is a social enterprise brought to life by the experiences of its founders, Anju Kurian & Anne-Barbara Lemmens in re-entering the workforce after a career break.

After a career break to take her of her sons, in 2012, Anju went back to work as a management consultant. In 2015, Anne-Barbara, an expat from the Netherlands and mom of 2, arrived in the US ready to settle her family and get back to her career in management consulting.  They both noticed the same problem – many talented, experienced moms (professional women) were struggling to make the same transition.

Inspired by our own experiences, we started Vermilion Talent to create a guided approach to re-entering the workforce. We have the unique privilege of building a company that is changing the lives of candidates and influencing how companies view women who have taken a career break.  Our focus is to build confident leaders and help women to reclaim their professional lives.

Vermilion Talent, in partnership with local companies, resource providers, and our partners, is the hub for career re-entry.  We have created a platform for talented, professional women to reclaim their careers.
