Summer Camps, Indoor Family Entertainment Centers and Outdoor Amusement Parks Can Open in New York

2/18/2021

Picture
As we make our way through another snowy day, the thought of summer is a welcome distraction. Yesterday we received some good news for summer planning. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that day and overnight summer camps in New York State can begin to plan for reopening!

The green light to open camps is a huge sigh of relief for many parents who have children who attend, or plan to attend, sleep away camps in New York State. Last summer sleep away camps did open successfully in other states but New York did not allow it. However, many day camps did open safely in New York last summer thanks to strict health and safety measures like masks, temperature checks, distancing, elimination of busing and pods/cohorts.
Many parents are eager to send their kids to camp this summer because it will provide them with some much needed activity, independence, socialization, fresh air and fun! The pandemic has been crushing to everyone and camp is a great step in bringing some normalcy and happiness to our children... and some much needed free time and uninterrupted work time to parents.

What's next? The Department of Health will issue specific reopening guidance, including details on timing, in the coming weeks.

Also announced yesterday, indoor family entertainment centers and places of amusement can open with a 25 percent capacity limit beginning Friday, March 26. This is good news for indoor water parks and other attractions/recreation businesses like The Kartrite in Monticello and Legoland Discovery Center in Yonkers, which have remained closed over the course of the pandemic. Their websites do not contain reopening details yet but it is anticipated that will be coming soon based on this announcement!

CHECK OUT INDOOR PLAY & ADVENTURE CENTERS- WHAT'S OPEN & WHAT'S NOT
Picture
Lastly, the governor stated that outdoor amusement parks can open with a 33 percent capacity limit beginning Friday, April 9. Other states did allow these to open last summer but not New York, so this is a welcome change. Businesses like Rye's Playland Park and Splashdown Beach in Fishkill, NY never opened their doors last summer.
Of course there is some uncertainty and concern with reopening while COVID-19 cases are still present. While these attractions can be good for our mental health, they are sure to bring people together, which is how the virus spreads. While some people have been fortunate enough to be vaccinated, more research is needed to determine if you can still be contagious after being vaccinated. So for now it is critical that we stay vigilant about social distancing and mask wearing.

Something else to keep in mind is that the CDC says that
indoor spaces are more risky than outdoor spaces because it might be harder to keep people apart and there’s less ventilation indoors. So we can take comfort in choosing outdoor experiences over indoor ones for now.

What's next? The governor is requiring that all facilities submit reopening plans with health protocols to the local health department. Masks and social distancing will be required for all customers and staff, and customers will be required to have a health screening with temperature checks prior to entry.

Why You Should Schedule a Visit with a Genetics Counselor

2/16/2021

Picture
Congratulations! You’re pregnant! Have you talked with a genetic counselor yet? At one time, talking with a counselor and pursing genetic screening was something reserved only for older moms, typically those over 35 year of age. But today, leading maternal-fetal medicine experts are recommending that women of all ages should be offered genetic screening.

So, who are genetic counselors and what do they do? These licensed professionals work closely with your OBGYN to identify and recommend screening for potential genetic abnormalities that could affect your baby’s health. While age does raise the chances of certain risks, your birthdate is not the only factor you should consider.

The first step is having sit-down meeting, usually informal to start, so the counselor can get to know more about you. They will speak with you to get more information about any inherited diseases and ask questions about your medical history.

“Genetic counseling can add so much to the experience of being pregnant,” says Dr. Caroline Stella, Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at White Plains Hospital. “Even if you aren’t interested in having a genetic screening, it always helps to sit down with a counselor and hear about various options.”

Not all counseling sessions lead to testing. Sometimes just talking it through and getting the facts can help to set your mind at ease or help you make a decision about next steps. But if you are at least 10 weeks along, you may be offered non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS). You’ll be asked to give a blood sample that looks for small fragments of DNA circulating in your blood, as well as undergo an ultrasound to try to spot any physical signs of abnormality.

The conditions doctors are specifically looking for include:

  • Down syndrome (presence of an extra chromosome 21)
  • Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome – the presence of an extra chromosome 13)
  • Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome – the presence of an extra chromosome 18)

Picture
Of course, this test is also a great opportunity to learn your baby’s gender. Sex chromosomes XX means your baby is a girl while an XY combo reveals that a son is on the way!

Should the screen come back positive or any of the abnormal conditions, further testing will be used to definitively confirm or rule out a condition. Genetic testing can also be customized based on family history or specific concerns, and additional tests include cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy, among others.

“It’s not just about getting excellent maternal-fetal care, it’s about supporting the expectant parents’ emotional aspect during this exciting time of life, and all the worry and hopes that go along with it,” says Dr. Stella. “Genetic counseling is one important part of that. We want to make sure our patients have the most comprehensive experience possible, including access to various diagnostic testing options should they be needed, depending on what the results of the screenings determine.”

Did you know that New York is one of the few places in the world where you can find Sugar Maple trees (our official state tree) that produce maple syrup? The process of tapping maple trees, collecting the sap, and making maple syrup can be a fun experience for kids. We are lucky that this activity can be enjoyed right here in Westchester County!

Maple sugaring season, when maple syrup is made, typically starts in late February and runs into April (depending on weather). There are several local Westchester County farms and nature centers that are offering outdoor, distanced opportunities for kids to give maple sugaring try. We have detailed these below. If you are interested in participating make sure you register in advance where necessary and expect distancing and health guidelines to be in place (like mask wearing and capacity limits). Enjoy!

Starting in late January through early February, kids can travel back in time to learn about maple sugaring throughout history. They will learn how Native Americans discovered maple sugar and our modern day techniques to collect and create syrup at our outdoor sugaring sites. This program will also include a small seasonal treat.

As a bonus, at the end of the season on a weekend in early March, participants can return to the Nature Center to watch them make maple syrup in their Sugar Shack. Any groups who participate in the program through the season will have the opportunity to go home with a small jar of fresh maple syrup.

Indoor Play & Adventure Centers for Westchester Kids- What's Open and What's Not 2021

1/21/2021

Picture
As we approach the one year mark of the pandemic many of us are searching for ways to keep our kids entertained, challenged and active. Typically this time of year we head indoors to enjoy the amazing indoor play and adventure centers we have right here in Westchester. But this year is different. So we took a look at all of the local indoor play spaces, kids gyms, trampoline parks, bowling alleys, arcades, climbing centers, mini golf courses and more to identify which spots are open and which are not.

The following list highlights local indoor entertainment venues for kids in or near Westchester, noting which are open, temporarily closed or permanently closed. Many of these centers offer private small group classes or pods even if their location is closed. Also, you can take advantage of virtual and online classes being offered by many local kids gyms from the safety of your home so do check their websites for details.

As with everything these days, things are always changing. So while some locations may be listed as temporarily closed, their status can change at any time. Same goes for open locations.

Open locations have mandatory health and safety measures in place including capacity restrictions, sanitizing, masks, health screen waivers and advance reservations. Before heading out be sure to find out what you need to do for a safe and fun and experience.

Little artists can get in touch with their creative side with these art programs for kids in Westchester. The Best Day Camps in Westchester County & Nearby 2021

Picture
Camp Hillard
Maybe it's all of this cold weather, or the fact that we're stuck inside A LOT, but I cannot stop thinking about summer! I cannot wait for my kids to return to some "normalcy" and get outside with old and new friends for long days of swimming, arts and crafts, ice cream, soccer games and all the fun stuff they did pre-pandemic.

It turns out that I am not the only one thinking about summer. In fact, some camps are filling up fast as a result of possible capacity reductions due to COVID... and an eagerness to have a plan in place for, what looks to be, a real shot of a much safer, social, active and fun summer.

While the pandemic is still with us it is reassuring to know that many day camps in Westchester County did run safely last summer. Their success will help define how camp can run smoothly this summer— so children can have some much needed independence, socialization, confidence and teamwork as well as many other critical values they experience at camp. Camp gives children a unique opportunity to try new things, make new friends, get fresh air, learn new skills, foster interests and be active!

It's not too early to start your day camp search for summer 2021. In fact, registration is open at most camps. To kick off your camp search we are providing a list of 32 amazing day camps that serve Westchester County families. Many of these were recommended by moms in our community.

If you are feeling overwhelmed about which camp to choose, think about what criteria is most important to you and make that your priority. Things to consider include:
  • Price
  • Location
  • Fellow friends attending
  • COVID health and safety measures
  • Activities
  • Facilities
  • Swimming program
  • Director
  • Vibe, mission, values
  • Staff to camper ratio or group size
  • Transportation
  • Extended hours
  • Lunch
  • Feedback from friends, reviews or referrals

Other Ideas for Camp

Picture
You can also contact your town recreation department to see if they will be offering day camp this summer. Town camps are typically lower in price and are a great way for kids to make new friends, or reconnect with old friends, right in your community. Westchester County Parks also provides a variety of summer programs for children.

Another idea is to check with your preschool, school, church, synagogue or community center. They typically have programs as well. Also, many pool clubs, athletic clubs, recreation centers and country clubs offer camps.

Entertainment venues, art schools, museums, adventure centers, sports venues, nature centers and just about anywhere your child can take a class or activity, offer camps. Just keep in mind they may not have a robust outdoor full day, full summer program like the ones on this list. If you are looking for a specialty camp, like a tech camp, sports camp or art camp, do not worry. We'll be putting together a list of those as well.

New Year's Resolutions: 4 Books to Get You Inspired

1/4/2021

Picture
2020 was quite a year.  But it is now behind us (ahhh... big sigh of relief). A new year feels like a fresh start. A clean slate. And now more than ever that feels GOOD!

Many of us enjoy making New Year's resolutions as a way to look forward, establish better habits, improve areas of our life that we want to work on, focus on our health, and jump start our ambitions. New year, new you, right?!

Over the course of this pandemic I immersed myself in the world of self-help books to find some inspiration, motivation, entertainment and guidance to make life feel a little more opportunistic. A little more in control. A little less overwhelming. Reading stories about others overcoming obstacles, having life altering experiences and finding love can be so inspiring.

I discovered four books that really filled me up. They taught me a lot. Made me laugh. Made me cry. Gave me epiphanies. Helped me let go of past disappointments. Uncovered ways to be the best mom I can be. Motivated me to start taking care of ME. Gave me the courage to accept that there are things I do not like and have the power to change... NOW. Perhaps they will bring the same comfort and inspiration to you. And give you the tools and guidance to build your own resolutions for a transformational 2021.

I'm sure many of the moms out there struggle to find the time to read. I struggle with that too. So I found a way to combine exercise and books by listening to them while walking or jogging. You can also listen to them in the car or at home if you find that convenient.

Check out these four books to get you inspired to develop your New Year's resolutions, start making positive changes and pave the way for— what might just be— the best year of your life.

Happiness

Picture
"It's about living in the moment and appreciating the smallest things. Surrounding yourself with the things that inspire you and letting go of the obsessions that want to take over your mind. It is a daily struggle sometimes and hard work but happiness begins with your own attitude and how you look at the world.”
― Gretchen Rubin

While the The Happiness Project isn't a new book (written in 2009), it is a long-standing best seller and shows up in any list when searching for books about happiness.

The story guides you through one mother's quest to find happiness and the actions she takes to achieve it over the course of a year. Her story is heart warming, entertaining, relatable, and inspiring.

The book is very well researched and written, pulling you into a delightful journey of self-discovery. Gretchen's process of defining monthly resolutions and uncovering "splendid truths" can become yours. Her "happiness" ideas will inspire you to create your own. Just layer in your personal values, goals and interests.

Have you ever heard the famous parenting quote "The days are long but the years are short"? It came from this book.

Love & Marriage

Picture
“For love, we will climb mountains, cross seas, traverse desert sands, and endure untold hardships. Without love, mountains become unclimbable, seas uncrossable, deserts unbearable, and hardships our lot in life.”
― Gary Chapman

This is an oldie but a goodie! The 5 Love Languages was written back in 1992 but is still totally relevant today.

The author, an experienced marriage counselor, distills down all of the ways of expressing and receiving love into five different "love languages."

Why does this matter? Because everyone gives and receives love differently. Identifying a "primary love language" can help you decode how to make your partner feel loved and how you want to be loved. And with all of this time together, it is more important than ever to feel connected and loved.

What is your love language? Gifts? Quality time together? Acts of service? Physical touch? Words of affirmation? Whatever it is, knowing yours and your lover's can dramatically improve how you communicate and enjoy your life together.

I found this book to be illuminating, intriguing and entertaining. Dr. Chapman's engaging and true stories illustrate the critical need for love and how identifying and catering to someone's love language can radically strengthen and improve your relationship.

Career

Picture
If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.”
― Jen Sincero

The book You Are a Badass can be a game changer. Written by Westchester County native Jen Sincero, this book gives you step-by-step instructions to start making some serious improvements to your life NOW.

Her edgy tone is inspiring and humorous at the same time. She walks you through the amusing, provocative and sometimes painful stories of her own life experiences and the lessons she gleaned from them. Her advice focuses on loving yourself and believing in yourself. Moving forward and not looking back. Taking action. Not giving up. Surrounding yourself with winners. Working through obstacles. Being determined. Making the reality you want yours.

If you are ready to turn your career ambitions into reality, this book is for you.

Family & Parenting

Picture
“In our attempt to shelter our kids from adversity, we rob them of the opportunity to make decisions, learn from their mistakes, and develop the resilience needed to thrive through the ups and downs of life. This is all done in the name of love—but too much of a good thing can result in kids who always expect to get what they want when they want it.”
― Amy McCready

I consider this book THE parenting manual. The author, Amy McCready, is a parenting genius.

Whether you have toddlers or teens, The Me, Me, Me Epidemic will give you practical
advice to teach independence, healthy attitudes, responsible behavior and decision making. Not to mention how to address bad behavior and when to ignore it.

If you are tired of nagging, yelling, back talk, doing everything for your child (that they are clearly capable of doing on their own... or at least should be) then this book is for you.

Rather than dreading all of this extra time together, start enjoying it with these positive parenting tips and tricks. It will be your secret weapon.
Wishing all of our readers a happy and healthy 2021! You got this.

(914) Cares is a Westchester based non-profit with the mission of supporting those in our community who struggle to meet basic needs, with the goal of eradicating poverty in Westchester. They understand the needs of those in our community through our existing relationships with over 60 local non-profits, schools and agencies. Many community members are not aware of the acute need that exists in our community:
  • 21% of residents are food insecure (hungry or at risk for hunger)
  • 12.3% of households live at or below the federal poverty line
  • 28% of children grades K-6 are on free and reduced lunch
  • 40% of babies born are born to families on Medicaid
  • There are over 3000 temporary housing facilities in the county (including homeless shelters, transitional housing, Day Shelters, and treatment centers)

(914) Cares has created different programs to address the most urgent needs of those in our community. These programs include:

Baby Bank provides 6 months of essentials to babies (0-24 months).  The mission is to help families in need keep their babies clean, healthy and happy. The goal is to provide non-financial relief that reduces the impact of poverty – allowing caregivers the ability to not have to choose between buying essentials for their babies and paying for rent (or medicine or heat or food).

Picture
Kids’ Kloset provides children in need with gently used clothing and related items. The mission is to help children in need be happier, boost self-esteem, and face daily challenges by providing hand-picked clothing and essentials that are just right for them. The goal is to ensure that children do not miss school due to lack of appropriate clothing to wear.

Diaper Depot provides a weeks worth of diapers and wipes each month to families in need. The mission is to ensure no family has to endure diaper deprivation.  The goal is to improve the physical and emotional health of families and babies, as well as allowing caregivers the ability to place babies in daycare.

Literacy Library provides books to families and school districts in under-resourced communities. The mission is to provide books to children. The goal is to provide every family in need and every classroom in the County with a sufficient supply of age-appropriate books for their libraries.

Picture
(914) Cares does not distribute to the public directly, however they do work with many community partners located throughout Westchester County to help those in need.

Get Into the Giving Spirit With Lifting Up Westchester

12/9/2020

Picture
The pandemic has been a hardship unlike any other to many in Westchester County (and all over the world). Our neighbors, friends, teachers and other community members are facing overwhelming challenges during this unprecedented, uncertain time. Many have lost jobs, endured illness and are therefore struggling to meet basic needs like paying rent, putting food on the table and clothing their children.

It’s easy to get so caught up in both the joys and obligations of the holidays that we lose sight of what they really mean. Giving back can be an extremely rewarding and memorable experience for you and your child. By helping others who aren’t as fortunate, kids can better see all the remarkable things to be grateful for in their own lives. In fact, giving back can be more rewarding than receiving lots of presents.

Right now you can make a remarkable difference by giving to Lifting Up Westchester. They are offering safe, easy ways to share the joy of the holiday season with families who could truly use a miracle right now. Why not spread a little holiday cheer this year?

What is Lifting Up Westchester?

Lifting Up Westchester (LUW) restores hope to Westchester County’s men, women and children in need by providing them with food, shelter and support—and lifting them to greater self-sufficiency with dignity and respect.

For four decades, Lifting Up Westchester has worked to permanently change the lives of our neighbors in crisis by finding them stable, long-term, housing and providing the support they need to rebuild their lives. We serve approximately 3,500 Westchester residents each year through four key program areas: Emergency Food & Shelter, Housing Stabilization, Vocational Training & Employment, and Next Generation Educational Opportunities.

How Can You Help?

Picture
There are many ways you can support LUW’s mission to help neighbors in need this holiday season and year-round.

1. Food Donations

4,000 Holiday Meals Needed
Due to the pandemic, LUW cannot accept  food donations but they still need our help. You can help by donating virtual food bags  for our hungry and homeless neighbors… because everyone deserves a joyous holiday season.

DONATE HOLIDAY MEALS

In lieu of pre-packed Holiday Grocery Bags, neighbors in need will receive gift cards to purchase holiday meals. Any excess funds donated will be used to provide weekday meals at Grace's Kitchen.

Donate-A-Bag Company Challenge
Now through December 18th, companies from around the County will participate in Lifting Up Westchester's friendly virtual competition to help provide 4,000 Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's meals for hungry and homeless neighbors.

This is the perfect holiday team building opportunity for employees… a chance for them to connect, compete and have fun this holiday season even if they’re working remotely.

PLUS you can compete against other local companies to see who can donate the most money for virtual grocery bags and win the Golden Grocery Bag Award!

SIGN UP FOR THE DONATE-A-BAG CHALLENGE

2. Holiday Toy Gifts

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, make today the day you give holiday joy to a child in need.

You can help provide 200 gifts for children in need this holiday season.
GIVE HOLIDAY TOY WISHES

You can purchase gift cards for homeless & at-risk teens who are often forgotten during the holidays.
GIVE GIFT CARDS FOR TEENS

You can make a donation in honor of someone special. We'll send them a card to tell them you did!
