What do your kids want out of summer camp?
Michael Rouse, the co-founder and Executive Director of ESF Camps, and his staff know — because they’re always looking for something new and interesting for today’s kids and teens.

“We’re really trying to create programs that are cutting-edge for children — the best on the planet,”Rouse said. “We do that with every single program we offer, in every single age group.”

Every year, there’s a new program, or a slightly different take on a tried-and-true idea. That’s how ESF has come to offer everything from day camp for 4-year-olds to business camps for teens (with technology, science, and the arts in between).

Mindful of the trust parents put in the camps, ESF has made a huge commitment to safety. The all-adult staff is trained every year on the latest skills and information. Have a child with a food allergy? They’re welcome at ESF: allergists often recommend the camps, which are welcoming and accommodating.

Even the car line is down to a science. “We’ve been doing this for 35 years, and we try to raise the bar every year,” Rouse said.

Not only are they efficient, they are diverse in their approach to providing different opportunities depending on their age group. Investing in children over time is part of their secret to raising leaders.

Note: Programs vary by ESF Camp location.

Picture
Mini Camp (Preschool) and Day Camp (Rising Pre-K– 3rd Grade)
These traditional camps are perfect for the youngest campers, starting at age 3 and running through third grade. It’s summer camp the way you remember it: swimming, arts & crafts, sports, science, camp performances, and action-packed, non-stop fun.

This camp is the foundation for your child’s future at ESF Camps. It’s here that kids begin to practice the 8 ESF Virtues, including the value of kindness, teamwork and community — and the joy that comes with it.

“At age 4, they begin to be the leader of their Tribe,” Rouse said. “In addition to having the time of their lives, they are discovering new passions and learning life skills that they will bring to the classroom in the next school year.”

Picture
Multi-Sport Camp (Rising 1st – 9th Grade)
It’s so common these days for kids to focus in on a sport at an early age, but research shows that can lead to overuse injuries and burnout. Children who play more than one sport stay healthier, physically and mentally.

ESF’s Multi-Sport camps give kids the chance to learn and play 10 sports weekly, and two to three each day. That means they can try a new sport — and, maybe, discover they love it. From baseball and basketball to lacrosse and soccer, multi-sport camp provides rising first through ninth graders with top-notch instruction and skill development. Campers are grouped by rising grade levels into divisions called Conferences. They discover their inner athlete through game play, instructional clinics, tournaments, and more.

The coaches use sports to keep building character, including fostering trustworthiness, effort, accountability, leadership, and teamwork.

Picture
Senior Camp (Rising 4st – 10th Grade)
This camp, for rising fourth through 10th graders, is all about what ESF calls “True Life Adventures.” Senior Camp broadens the horizons of the older camper. It’s what kids this age are looking for — and need as they become more and more independent. From comic book design to digital photography and building a carnival from the ground up, these campers continue to learn teamwork, positivity and grit, and to embrace the community around them.

Campers work through team challenges, but keep things light with dance parties and daily swimming. Senior camp has leadership and service opportunities, but still lets kids play gaga, try an American Ninja Warrior course, and cheer their friends through camp competitions.

Picture
Specialty Major Camps (Rising K-9th Grade)
These specialty camps let kids pick a “major” and then drill down into a subject, and the range is enormous.

Science camps include exclusive partnerships with the Franklin Institute. Technology camps feature NEW and enhanced curriculum and program offerings uniquely designed through a new partnership with BSD (Build Something Different). Programs give campers a chance to dig into 3D game design, coding, and robotics, engineering and more!

Picture
ESF’s Junior Business Academy, which has an exclusive partnership with the Jack Welch Management Institute, gives campers the opportunity to create their own business in just one week! For rising fifth through eighth graders, business camp helps build the entrepreneurial spirit, and further cements the values of respect, resilience, and trustworthiness by providing campers with a tool belt to be successful.

Picture
Tennis Camp (Rising 1st– 10th Grade)
This is how ESF got its start, way back in 1982, and it’s still a cornerstone today. Budding players — whether they’re beginners or experts — get high-quality instruction, practice, and match play. Kids can swim daily if they want, and play “Grand Slam” tournaments weekly!

Ready to register, or want to know more? Get to know ESF Camps’ staff and programs in person at their open house.

ESF is hosting open houses with tour sessions:
  • Saturday April 21st  at Greenwich Academy - Sessions 1:00pm, 2:15pm and 3:30pm
  • Sunday April 22nd at Riverdale Country School - Sessions 1:00pm, 2:15pm and 3:30pm

Updated October 2018
Picture
It is that time of the year, finally! Apples, pumpkins and leaves, OH MY! Fall is here and the greatest way to celebrate is to enjoy the outdoors and get your family out for some fresh air and fresh picked apples. These hot spots are recommendations from our community of Westchester Moms to get the best apples, pumpkins and don’t forget baked goods and apple cider! These locations are all located in and around the heart of Westchester County, NY.
STUART’S FRUIT FARM, 62 Granite Springs Road, Granite Springs NY, 10527
Phone: 914-245-2784
Website: http://www.stuartsfarm.com
Hours: 9/6-11/30 10AM- 5PM
Admission: Free Entry
Stuart’s has a very “home-like” feel from its apple picking to its pumpkin picking. Stuart’s has a bakery with apple cider donuts that can satisfy you just by the smell! I know some other Westchester Moms had mentioned waiting in line at the bakery for up to 30 minutes but it is SO worth it! Apple picking begins September 6th and runs daily from 10AM- 5PM through November. Pumpkins will be available for picking in October. Don’t forget to take a hayride (weekends 11AM- 5PM) around the orchard and end your family trip with a fun picnic to take in the wonders of fall. Be sure to bring cash, as Stuart’s does not accept credit cards!

HARVEST MOON FARM & ORCHARD, 130 Hardscrabble Rd, North Salem, NY 10560
Phone: 914-485-1210
Website: http://www.harvestmoonfarmandorchard.com/
Hours: 8AM-6PM April- December, picking 9AM-4:30PM

Harvest Moon is family owned and operated. During the Fall they offer pick-your-own apples and a Fall Festival every weekend from September 8th through October 28tht. In addition Harvest Moon has a pumpkin patch, hayrides around the farm, a bounce house, live music, games, face painting, pony rides and more! As one Westchester Mom put it, "Harvest Moon has great entertainment and great food but be sure to wear your walking shoes!"

WILKENS FRUIT AND FIR FARM, 1335 White Hill Rd, Yorktown Hghts, NY 10598
Phone: 914-245-5111
Website: http://wilkensfarm.com
Hours: Pick-Your-Own: 10AM-4:30PM
Admission: Free Entry
As one Westchester Mom puts it “Wilkens is a no frills farm” with some very tasty apples that make the trip totally worth it! Even though it doesn’t pride itself on the extras like playgrounds or bouncy castles Wilkens can give you that afternoon “country” feel without actually going to the country. You will enjoy a hayride to the orchards, which will have apples, peaches, pumpkins or Christmas trees depending on when you visit. They also have a Corn Maze open Saturdays, Sundays and school holidays 10AM-5PM.

BARTON ORCHARDS, 63 Apple Tree Ln, Poughquag, NY 12570
Phone: 845-227-2306
Website: http://bartonorchards.com
Hours: 9AM-5PM daily
Admission Fee: Weekends only, there is a $5 admission fee for all guests
A Westchester Mom favorite, Barton Orchards features a petting zoo, playgrounds, a play area, a corn maze, fruits and veggies to pick, shaded picnic areas and so much more on the grounds!  On weekends, along with pick your own, there is live entertainment. Some have said that the line gets very long in the afternoon, thanks for that tidbit Westchester Moms! The month of September features the juicy Macintosh apples among many more. The pumpkin picking starts late September until the end of October, This mom’s advice is to go early and beat the crowd; my mom always said the early bird gets the worm!  Check out upcoming events on their bartonorchards.com/events-2/website.

FISHKILL FARMS, 9 Fishkill Farm Road, Hopewell JCT, NY 12533
Phone: 845 897-4377
Website: http://www.fishkillfarms.com/
Hours: 9AM-6PM
Admission Fee: $5 (age 12 and under are free)
Fishkill Farms has been around for about 100 years. Although lacking some bells and whistles like a playground or petting zoo, Fishkill has some low trees for the little ones to pick their own apples. Fishkill Farms can get crowded on the weekends so be sure to cancel all other plans or go early! Fishkill also has festivals going on every weekend from mid-September to mid-October! A little Westchester Moms secret… the donuts are amazing!

Picture
Day Trip ideas are exactly what you need in your life! While you can just set up in your local playground, not all parks offer a spray park to cool off in or a beach available to swim in on those hot summer days. There are definitely parks that have special perks that can make day trips with kids a lot more fun, attainable and of course affordable. We are gearing up for continuous hot days so make sure you and your children enjoy every second of the sun with these awesome Day Trip Ideas in and around Westchester County!
Westchester Parks Pass
All Westchester County pools (except Playland) require a Westchester County Park Pass or photo ID and proof of residence. The Westchester County Park Pass is $75 and is good for 3 years.  With the pass, you’re allowed to bring two adult guests and children under 12 at discounted admission rates. The pass also gets you discounts to pools and beaches and perks including admission to tennis courts at Tibbetts Brook Park. If you don’t have a pass, you can show your driver’s license with a Westchester address, but you can’t bring guests. Destinations that require a Westchester County Park Pass are marked with an asterisk *.

A Family Park Pass is also available for a fee of $150 and allows two adults and any children (ages 12 to 18) living in the household to get their own individual Park Pass. It is valid for families who need to purchase two or more. Only one address will be accepted for a family park pass,

A Park Pass or proof of county residency with a valid New York State driver's license is required at all Westchester County pools and beaches except Playland, FDR Park and Croton Point Beach.
Pool and Beach Fees
Entrance fees for county pools and beaches can be accessed here.

Splash Pad Parks

* Sprain Ridge Pool
Following a major renovation, the county's Sprain Ridge Pool reopened in July 2017. The pool has a new aquatic spray playground for children and a rebuilt child-friendly pool. The bathhouse, food concession area, restrooms, showers, and locker room have all been updated.

*Willson’s Waves Park (Westchester Mom recommended)
Willson’s Waves Pool is a secret thrill in the heart of Lower Westchester, residing in Mount Vernon. Keep in mind that this park requires a County Park Pass for entry. Showing off waves, water slides, a spray park, a splash pad and plenty of opportunities to have fun and get wet. This park can be a parents dream come true to assist with those hyper toddlers or just to get these kids away from the screens for an afternoon of excitement!
Address: East Lincoln Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY 10550
Fee: County Park Pass holders $8, Children (under 5 free) $5

*Tibbetts Brook Park (Westchester Mom recommended)
The main pool is a lazy river with a current that families love to relax in on a warm day. Keep in mind that this park requires a County Park Pass for entry. There is a spray playground for people of all ages and sports for some pool time fun. Although fun for everyone, Tibbetts does not have a pool like some of the many other parks on this list, but is a big area. As shared on the Westchester Moms Facebook group “Tibbetts may get crowded usually more on the weekends”.
Address: 355 Midland Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704
Fee: County Park Pass holders $8, Children (under 5 free) $5
Picture
Pierson Park (Westchester Mom recommended)
Pierson Park is a beautiful site along the Hudson River in direct view of the Tappan Zee Bridge. As shared on Westchester Moms Facebook Group, this park is free entry and free parking. Having those awesome features can cause this beautiful not so hidden park to become very crowded on beautiful days. The park includes a splash pad and playground.
Address: 238 West Main Street, Tarrytown, New York 10591
Fee: No parking charge, no entry fee

Harbor Island Park (Westchester Mom recommended)
Harbor Island is the Largest Village Park in Mamaroneck, which has playground equipment that can keep your child busy for days! In addition to having a great spray park, Harbor Island is also home to a beach. Harbor Island can become very crowded because they do host a summer day camp; so make sure to keep that in mind when planning your day!

Louis Engel Waterfront Park (Westchester Mom recommended)
As shared on the Westchester Moms Facebook page, this park like others can get very crowded on beautiful days. The trail and the exploration that can be done while visiting is well worth it though as this park sits nestled on the Hudson River in ear shot distance of the Metro North; this being one of the many reasons to be my daughter’s favorite park. Next to the spray park there is a great playground including giant train structures and slides. Although not large, this park is worth the visit for the scenery alone!
Address: Westerly Rd, Ossining, NY 10562
Fee: No parking charge, no entry fee

Swimming Pools

Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park
This beautiful scenic park in the heart of the Taconic Region is a stunning site. The park boasts an enormous sized pool that can hold more then 3,000 swimmers at one time being twice the size of an Olympic sized pool. Along with the pool there is a Lake for fishing and boating, a track, basketball courts, picnic areas and pavilions, a wonderful renovated playground with climbing structures, swings and so much more! Be sure to head to FDR early to avoid the later day crowds and get a full day trip out of this destination.
Address: 2957 Crompond Road Yorktown Heights, NY 10598
Fee: $8 per car entry, swimming- 10 years and younger $1, 10 years+ $2
*Saxon Woods Park (Westchester Mom recommended)
Saxon Woods contains a golf course as well as a miniature golf course, the county’s largest swimming pool, a children’s aquatic playground and picnic areas for lunch after some overdue swimming. Keep in mind that this park requires a County Park Pass for entry. Saxon Woods is also the site of the county’s only playground that is accessible to the disabled. A little note from Westchester Moms: Saxon is most often less crowded then Tibbetts Brook Park and can be easier to manage little ones. Saxon has a kiddie area and a huge sand box with tables and a great playground near by to satisfy all the needs of your family. Throughout the summer many camps frequent Saxon Woods over the other area parks, so make sure to be mindful when planning day trips!
Address: 1800 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605
Fee: County Park Pass holders $6, Children (under 5 free) $4
Picture
Also be sure to check with your town as many towns have their own pool!

Beaches

Canopus Lake (Personal Recommendation)
If you are looking to have a family day in the “country” then Canopus Lake is the right spot for you! After parking, you walk towards the beach and will pass large bathrooms on your left and on the right you will find a small store with picnic tables. Along with swimming Canopus Lake offers visitors fishing and row bats available for rent. With beautiful scenery among the mountains Canopus Lake is a wonderful day trip with my daughters favorite part being the outdoor showers to clean her feet before the car ride home.
Address: 1498 Route 301 Carmel, NY 10512
Fee: $7 per car, 5/28-6/24 weekends & holidays, 6/25- 9/5 daily

Playland Pool and Beach
The only of its kind on this list, Rye Playland has an expansive beach as well as a swimming pool and not to mention a whole amusement park! Although pricey, for a day trip this can be great fun for young ones who wouldn’t even cost any money for entry. The views are amazing and there is a lot to do in the area. My family and I went to the beach last year and in my opinion it was just as good as any “big” beach I have ever been to, there were a perfect amount of people, swimming, walking, building sandcastles and just soaking up the summer sun. It is definitely a must do once in Westchester County but don’t take my word, go check it out! If you are looking for a break from the heat you can also check out the Westchester Children’s Museum right at the beach on the boardwalk (parking is the same for Playland).
Address: 1 Playland Parkway Rye, NY 10580
Parking Fee: $10 weekends/ weekdays, $15 holidays
Pool Fee: Adult $6, children 5yr-11yr $4, Under 5 free
Beach Fee: Adult $4, children 5yr-11yr $3, Under 5 free
Picture

JWF Founder Jordan Fried Shares Tips To Prepare for Fall Lacrosse

11/29/2016

Picture
We had a chance to sit down with Jordan Fried, the owner of JWF Lacrosse. Fried recently started his private lacrosse coaching business in Westchester County. His goal is to make private lacrosse coaching more accessible to Westchester LAX players who want to take their game to the next level.

Why Jordan started the business:
Jordan Fried: No one helped me with the recruiting process growing up. I came up through the high school athletic system myself and encountered a lack of guidance along the way. As a result, I wanted to create a coaching business that would simplify the process and help more student athletes understand the recruiting system so they could get placed at their dream schools and do what they love to do- play lacrosse!

How Jordan became interested in lacrosse:
Jordan Fried: During my childhood, I was diagnosed with leukemia and was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering from 3-5. One day after receiving chemotherapy and walking to the car with my pole, I saw hundreds of people running in Orange jerseys in The New York City Marathon. I thought, “I’m going to do this one day.” Looking out the window and seeing those runners gave me hope that I too could run one day. My greatest vision was to beat cancer and to run just like them. Today, I am living a life beyond my wildest dreams. I beat cancer; I run annually in The New York City Marathon for Fred’s team (and wear an Orange jersey!) and live out my dream of playing and teaching lacrosse. The gift of running, freedom and hope was given to me when I almost lost my life, and I try to pay that gift forward with every student I teach. To me, lacrosse is not just about a love of the game. It is about the freedom to run, the freedom to win, the freedom to fight for what you believe in despite all odds being against you.  If I can do it, anyone can do it.

Working with Jordan vs. other Westchester County lacrosse coaches.  What you need to know:
Jordan Fried: As a result of playing internationally, I gained invaluable experience that taught me camaraderie and leadership skills. Lacrosse isn’t just about having the right skills on the field; it is also about knowing how to be a smarter player on the field. I teach my students a combination of the “soft skills” and the on the field skills they need to ensure success.

How coaching works with JWF Lacrosse:
Jordan Fried: I can coach you wherever is convenient for you- at a local field in Chappaqua or a local middle school of your choice.

How players can start preparing for Westchester County lacrosse this fall:
Jordan Fried: Lacrosse season officially kicks off in the beginning of March. However, if you want to play at the next level, you have to be playing lacrosse all year. Fall is the perfect time to prepare for the upcoming lacrosse season.

Here are my top 5 ways to start getting in shape for lacrosse this fall:

  1. Get on the field- Take advantage of the nice weather before it goes away. This is the ideal time to practice before it is below freezing temperatures.

  2. Start getting in shape- If you aren't doing hockey or basketball, you will want to work on your skills and get in the weight room. I also recommend running, doing speed ladder work and different cone drills.

  3. Stick Skills- Get on the wall and work on your stick skills. Being able to catch and throw left and right and being able to shoot left and right on the run is important.

  4. Position specific- If you play defense, now is a great time to work on your foot work. If you are a middie, work on longer sprints. If you play attack, work on change of direction and dodging.

  5. Lacrosse IQ- Start brushing up on your lacrosse IQ- if you play offense, understand the X’s and O’s of how an offense works. If you play defense, understand different slide packages and how defense works.

If you want to get ready for the upcoming season, you can sign up for the JWF Lacrosse ultimate warrior package, which includes strength conditioning, improvement of stick skills and the top 4 things to know for college recruiting. You can email me at jfried725@gmail.com or call 914-539-1279.

Stand Up Paddling: 5 Things to Know Before Taking the Plunge

6/7/2016

Picture
With the first official day of summer just a few weeks away and temperatures on the rise it’s a great time to mix up your fitness routine. Stand Up Paddling also known as SUP-ing has gained a lot of attention in recent years as it actually works your entire body (literally from head to toe). The art of balancing has also been proven to help offset the natural deterioration of our brains as we age. Not a bad benefit right?

Not sure if SUP-ing is right for you? Here are 5 things to know before taking the plunge.

How does SUP-ing differ from other workouts today?
Unlike other workouts that isolate certain areas of the body, SUP-ing works almost every single muscle from your head to your toes literally all at once.

What are the physical benefits?
SUP-ing is a full body workout. You will work your arms, back, shoulder and leg muscles as well as your core, back and abdominals.

It’s also a low impact workout so there is less risk of joint damage. This is appealing for runners in particular who are battling shin splints, knee or hip pain.

Will it improve my balance?
Yes. You need to stand upright which requires a significant amount of core stability and leg strength to maintain your balance on the board.

Are there any other benefits?
Mastering the art of good balance can increase your focus and balance in your day-to-day life as well. Exercising while gliding through the water is soothing which in turn can reduce stress and positively impact your mental health.

Is it expensive?
The pricing is comparable to other workout class rates in Westchester and includes the use of all gear (board, paddle, life vest).  Class sizes are kept small which is a great advantage for learning in a small group environment.

Ready to try it?
Nancy Vincent is the Founder of SUP Westchester, a stand up paddle boarding firm based in Long Island sound in Westchester County, NY.

Visit www.supwestchester.com to learn about her classes and kids kayaks, available for children ages 5-10. Private and private group lessons available.

All are brightly colored and difficult to miss. The park has swings for both younger and older children as well. My toddlers’ favorite of course is the sandbox. Should she play with it? Taste it? Or dig? These are some of the many things that cross her mind. The scenery in the park is almost jaw dropping at this time of the year. After hours of play you can strap the kids on your back or in a stroller and head out for a beautiful adventure in and around the woods. After all the fun is over find a picnic bench, which are located in the park and sit down for a nice lunch. Gedney Park is closed until June for renovations!

My toddler loves the train and no matter where on the jungle gym she is, she will make her way to the grass to wave to the trains as they pass. The park is part of the RiverWalk, which will eventually span 51.5 miles of Westchester along the Hudson. Riverfront Green has a stage where they host shows and fireworks in the summer.
