Westchester Health, Where You’re a Part of the Family

12/22/2020

Picture
One thing we love about raising our families in Westchester is that we have access to state-of-the-art pediatrics without the hustle and bustle of the city. Westchester is filled with great institutions such as Westchester Health, part of Northwell Health Physician Partners and an affiliate of Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center. With a team of board trained and certified physicians who specialize in providing a broad range of comprehensive care, managing both common and complex illnesses in infants, children, adolescents and young adults 21 and under, we know our babies are always in good hands. (They’ll always be our babies, right?!)

As a fellow mother, it’s so reassuring to have this exceptional resource nearby. Knowing I have trusted and caring doctors so close to home makes routine checkups and the possibility of unforeseen emergencies so much less nerve-wracking. Plus, should there ever be an emergency, affiliate Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center boasts 88 outstanding sub-specialties and programs and was named the largest provider of pediatric health services in New York State and one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.

Westchester Health Pediatrics is there for all of parenthood’s what-ifs, from “How do I get my baby to sleep at night?” to “Why does my teen sleep all day?” With pediatricians who have extensive experience in their field, using the latest technology and techniques to diagnose, treat and provide preventative care for all types of children’s illnesses, injuries and medical conditions, including asthma, acne, obesity, diabetes, learning disabilities, STDs, eating disorders, ADHD, depression and more, Westchester Health has you covered.
As a parent, nothing is worse than feeling like your concerns aren’t being heard, which is why the team at Westchester Health firmly believes that good treatment starts with good listening. This ethos extends to their belief that the best patient is an informed patient, and that patient education is critical to long-term health (not to mention your health as a worried mother!). Whether you have been with Westchester Health for years or are new to the practice, you quickly recognize that their Pediatrics Department truly cares about each and every one of their patients and their families.

If you are interested in learning more about Westchester Health Pediatrics, you can call 914-232-1919 to talk to a Westchester Health specialist or find the location nearest you.

We polled our social media followers and about 80% said they would not be taking their children to see Santa this year. Get into the holiday spirit with a one-on-one live chat with Santa himself. Embark on a magical Elf-guided journey to the North Pole guided by Elf Pickles, Dimples, Bazzle and Tinsel. This is pricy one, but perhaps also the most memorable— starts at $64.95.

This is a livestream with on-demand video available after the show. You can watch it live, or view the video for a certain amount of time after the show takes place. A ticket is $25.

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker

A holiday season wouldn't be complete without the New York City Ballet’s landmark production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. This exquisite ballet performance was originally delivered in December 2019 at Lincoln Center. Enjoy Tschaikovsky’s iconic score conducted by Andrew Litton and performed by the 62-piece New York City Ballet Orchestra, hundreds of delightfully costumed characters, spectacular feats of fancy, and a magnificent tree.

Literacy Library provides books to families and school districts in under-resourced communities. The mission is to provide books to children. The goal is to provide every family in need and every classroom in the County with a sufficient supply of age-appropriate books for their libraries.

Get Into the Giving Spirit With Lifting Up Westchester

12/9/2020

Picture
The pandemic has been a hardship unlike any other to many in Westchester County (and all over the world). Our neighbors, friends, teachers and other community members are facing overwhelming challenges during this unprecedented, uncertain time. Many have lost jobs, endured illness and are therefore struggling to meet basic needs like paying rent, putting food on the table and clothing their children.

It’s easy to get so caught up in both the joys and obligations of the holidays that we lose sight of what they really mean. Giving back can be an extremely rewarding and memorable experience for you and your child. By helping others who aren’t as fortunate, kids can better see all the remarkable things to be grateful for in their own lives. In fact, giving back can be more rewarding than receiving lots of presents.

Right now you can make a remarkable difference by giving to Lifting Up Westchester. They are offering safe, easy ways to share the joy of the holiday season with families who could truly use a miracle right now. Why not spread a little holiday cheer this year?

What is Lifting Up Westchester?

Lifting Up Westchester (LUW) restores hope to Westchester County’s men, women and children in need by providing them with food, shelter and support—and lifting them to greater self-sufficiency with dignity and respect.

For four decades, Lifting Up Westchester has worked to permanently change the lives of our neighbors in crisis by finding them stable, long-term, housing and providing the support they need to rebuild their lives. We serve approximately 3,500 Westchester residents each year through four key program areas: Emergency Food & Shelter, Housing Stabilization, Vocational Training & Employment, and Next Generation Educational Opportunities.

How Can You Help?

Picture
There are many ways you can support LUW’s mission to help neighbors in need this holiday season and year-round.

1. Food Donations

4,000 Holiday Meals Needed
Due to the pandemic, LUW cannot accept  food donations but they still need our help. You can help by donating virtual food bags  for our hungry and homeless neighbors… because everyone deserves a joyous holiday season.

DONATE HOLIDAY MEALS

In lieu of pre-packed Holiday Grocery Bags, neighbors in need will receive gift cards to purchase holiday meals. Any excess funds donated will be used to provide weekday meals at Grace's Kitchen.

Donate-A-Bag Company Challenge

Minding Your Mental Health- Self Care Tips for Moms to Cope With the Pandemic

12/4/2020

Picture
Life is full of challenges these days, one thing for certain, making time for self-care doesn't always seem like the priority.

As moms we are dealing with homeschooling, the pandemic, the holidays and trying to keep up with everyday responsibilities. This can feel, well, overwhelming. Under normal circumstances mothers are faced with multiple demands, but the duration and chronic nature of this situation is unprecedented.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I provide counseling, spending my days helping others navigate through the stressors of life. Recently, I find myself wondering if I have enough emotional energy to do the same for myself.  On a typical day I am trying to work from home, stopping constantly to help my children, juggling laundry, dishes, the dog etc. etc. But recently I began asking myself how am I caring for me?  What do I need to be able to be available for my family?
Merry Deal Days Are Here! Now through Dec. 20th!
This reminded me of the instructions given when flying on an airplane, put your oxygen mask on first before you place it on your children. At first that order seems wrong.  When it is symbolic of something, we all must do before we can help anyone else.  When we are sleep deprived, hungry, stressed or worn down we don't have much left to give.

Self-care is not a treat we give ourselves as a reward; it should be part of our everyday, a moment we take to refuel to go the distance and be our best self. So, prioritize making time for you. Here are a few other quick tips.

  • Take care of your physical needs- Make sure you get enough sleep, eat nutritiously, and find ways to move your body regularly.

  • Practice gratitude- Each day, take a few minutes to think about the things in your life you are thankful for. Try a guided gratitude meditation cultivate gratitude during the holidays  and  guided gratitude meditation.

  • Surround yourself with positive people- Make sure you’re spending time with people who support your goals and encourage you when times are tough.

  • Do mini check-ins several times a day- Throughout the day, take a few deep breaths and do a quick body scan. Notice and release tension and ask yourself what you can do in that moment to care for your needs.

  • Ask for help when you need it- Don’t overthink it. Be specific, clear and direct and ask for what you need.

  • Be kind to yourself- We are all doing the best we can, in this moment in time. Ask yourself, would I ever speak to a friend the way I  am speaking to myself? If not, change it.

What Is Codeverse and Why It Will Be Your New Favorite Holiday Activity

12/1/2020

With “home for the holidays” taking on a whole new meaning this year, our favorite seasonal activities are going to look different but that doesn’t mean they still can’t be awesome!

Codeverse just launched their Gift of Code program and it is the perfect activity for your kids through this holiday season.  Gift of Code with Codeverse is a free 2 month program that will teach your kids the foundations of coding through holiday themed challenges and events.

Picture
The first reason we love this program is that it is FREE, fun, and holiday themed!  Once you sign up (here) you will get a free account to their interactive online coding platform.  Through “Missions”, step-by-step instructive tutorials, your kid will start creating their very own apps and games that can be shared to any cell phone number once they are done!

Codeverse will help your kid create holiday themed games that you can customize and send to your friends and family as holiday cards!

Another reason we love this program is that it is educational and makes screen time smarter. If you are like me, you know that coding is important but don’t really know what it is! Well, coding is the language that a computer reads to know what to do next. Not only is coding an important skill that our kids will definitely need to know for their future but it helps them learn skills like problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity.  Finally coding will help your kid practice their reading, math, science, and typing skills while they are on holiday break.

Gift of Code with Codeverse will help keep your kid entertained, engaged, and learning through this holiday season and you will be able to share and brag about their creations to friends and family!  Overall it is a win, win, win and we can’t wait to see what your kids create with code!

9 Ways To Energize Your Business in a Pandemic

12/1/2020

Picture
Times are tough for businesses right now. We get it because we are one too. Businesses of all sizes have been negatively impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the current market can feel discouraging there are multiple ways to break through the clutter, gain new customers, get support and make the most of this unprecedented time
Here are some tips to keep your business moving forward during this challenging time:

  • APPLY FOR LOANS & GRANTS- Take advantage of government (federal, state and local) and private sector programs including grants and loans. Helpful links include: SBA Coronavirus Relief Options, Federal Grants, NY State COVID-19 Loans & Assistances to Small Businesses, Westchester County Business FIRST, US Chamber of Commerce Save Small Initiative.

  • STAY CURRENT- Make sure your website is always up to date— include  your current COVID-19 health and safety measures, your store hours, curbside pickup details and your latest offerings. If you do not have a website you can do this through a Facebook Page, social posts and emails.

  • LIST YOUR BUSINESS- Sign up for free business listings on Google Places, Yahoo! Local and Bing. Also take advantage of local directories and resources like the Business Council of Westchester and your local Chamber of Commerce.

  • LEVERAGE SOCIAL MEDIA- Set up and optimize your business profile/page on each network that makes sense for your business— consider Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Tik Tok and Pinterest. Build a following by posting regularly and tagging where appropriate. Just as important as posting is engaging in other's posts by sharing, liking and commenting. Groups within networks are another great social media tool. Expert tip: you can try to negotiate a "share for share" or giveaway with an influencer or relevant profile and get some free exposure! When it comes to social media, you get what you give.

  • COLLECT & SHARE CUSTOMER OR PRODUCT REVIEWS- Reviews have never been more important! Social proof and online reputation can legitimize your business or product, increase reach and catapult you to success. Key review sites include Facebook, Yelp, Google and the Better Business Bureau. If you don't have any reviews you can get started by asking your top fans or loyal customers to write one for you. Don't forget to leverage reviews on your website, in social media and other touchpoints.

  • MAKE THE MOST OF FREE CHANNELS- Promote your offerings on free community calendars and, if appropriate, distribute press releases. Aim to get free press coverage known as "earned media".

  • ADVERTISE- Broaden your reach and drive awareness with a reputable and partner who aligns well with your target audience. Advertise special offers, upcoming events, programs and classes.

  • USE EMAIL MARKETING- If you are not using email to communicate with customers and prospective customers then you are missing an opportunity. You can start building an email list by using free email software like MailChimp. Set up a sign-up form and start sharing relevant content over email to your subscribers. Emails can be used to promote events, store openings, special offers, purchase status, programming and more.

  • DON'T MISS OUT ON SEO- While paid advertising, social media, and other online platforms can generate traffic to websites, the majority of online traffic is driven by search engines. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results. Depending on your bandwidth, willingness to learn, and the complexity of your website, you could perform some basic SEO yourself. Another option is to hire an expert.
