Ooh La La! Lash Extensions from Lash Affair Studio in Westchester.

10/31/2016

Picture
The first modern false eyelashes were made from human hair, commissioned by silent-film director D. W. Griffith so that his starlet’s lashes would touch her cheeks with every soulful downward gaze.

Although you may think it’d be hard to improve on these natural materials, in reality, the difference in texture between eyelashes and the stuff that grows from the head would make such extensions look a little strange. Stick-on strips have been available in drugstores for decades, but it wasn’t until the mid-2000s that cosmetic scientists developed semipermanent extensions. Also known as grafted lashes, these delicate fibers fuse to the top of pre-existing lashes with pharmaceutical-grade glue, lending eyes a lush, natural-looking fringe without the use of mascara.

As clients lie on a table with their eyes shut, a professional applies artificial lashes strand by strand, carefully bonding them about a millimeter away from the eyelid to avoid any contact with the skin or eye. The look stays intact for about two to six weeks—natural eyelashes have a finite lifespan, and when they fall out, they take the extensions with them.

Lash extensions generally come in two varieties: mink and synthetic. Mink extensions are made from sanitized, hypoallergenic hairs collected by brushing live mink, the same petite carnivores whose famously soft fur is prized for a variety of other applications. For synthetic extensions, lab technicians replicate the look and feel of natural hairs by forging lashes from plastic, faux-mink poly fibers, silk blends, or high-quality keraspecific fibers, which are chemically identical to real human hair. No matter the material, extensions should feel comfortable and light as they frame what poets have long called “the windows to the soul” and “the worst part of the face to be poked in.”

Tick Tock

10/31/2016

Mothers can best be compared to a clock because we are always running 24/7. Actually, I think it would be more accurate to say we are the clock. We wake the house,  put it to bed and carefully time everything in between.

But what if the clock just stopped running? What if moms just ran out of batteries? Who would recharge us and would anyone even notice? Once they ran out of clean dishes would they just switch to paper plates and to Crocs when there were no more socks?

My friends Stacy and I chat and text each other throughout our day. We complain, laugh, vent, scream, cry and swap stories. We are in essence the same person just “insert husband and children here”. We usually want the same thing: to be appreciated for what we do everyday but mostly just to be thanked for our “time”.

If I could share some of our conversations it would have the makings of a new reality show: Mothers Gone Mad… But you would also see what we do all day is not for us but for everyone else in our house. No one knows the importance of running things in a timely matter more than mothers. If we wake up just five minutes late well then the whole household’s daily timeline is thrown off schedule.

When I do actually leave the house alone just for hour I get the “emergency” calls:  Where are the toe nail clippers? How do you boil water? Why won’t the heat turn on? WHERE ARE YOU? When are you coming home?  All that happens before I reach the first stop sign.

So what if we actually just stopped and disappeared just for a day. Would the clock keep ticking as usual or would time stand still?  (Would we be missed or would they just miss clean socks and underwear.)

It can be frustrating at times and yes all moms complain. But the truth is and I think Stacy would agree (when she is not scrubbing toilets) that just as our households can not run without us we would not function without them.

We  may occasionally operate on low batteries  but in the end we love what we do even when we don’t. And just like clocks sometimes we need to find a way to spring forward on days that all we want to do is fall back…

How to Make the Flu Shot a Little Less Painful (For Everyone)

10/19/2016

Picture
It's that time of year again. Time for your child's annual flu vaccine. As we dread this appointment with fears of screaming, crying and overall panic, we know that the vaccine can help protect our little ones from getting really really sick.

No biggie, you may be thinking, my child takes the mist. Well, not this year. Unfortunately the CDC has recommended against using the mist version of the flu vaccine this year due to effectiveness concerns. So the flu shot it is.

In anticipation of my daughter's upcoming flu shot appointment, I had a chat with a friend who told me about the Shot Blocker. Her son has frequent allergy shots and his doctor recommended it to make the process less painful (for all). What is this miracle product I thought?

The Shot Blocker is a desensitizer— a small plastic piece that gets pressed against your child's arm where the needle will go. The makers of the Blocker claim that it reduces needle pain and anxiety by "saturating the sensory nerves distracting the patient from the pain signals caused by the needle poke."

Worth a try? Definitely.  I hopped on Amazon and purchased it for $5.

Appointment Day. "Good news," I told my daughter. "I got something special for you so your flu shot hopefully won't hurt." She was not thrilled with the thought of getting a shot at all but seemed relieved to know that maybe I pulled a rabbit out of my hat and this thing was not going to hurt.

The shot. The nurse took a quick look at it, read the instructions quickly and was on board. We placed it on, gave her the shot and believe it or not, my daughter said it hurt less! I am not sure if the pain was less, or maybe just having this "magic piece" helped her emotionally. Either way it helped! If you are looking for a secret weapon to survive this year's flu shot, try the Shot Blocker.

If anyone has already used the Shot Blocker, please share your thoughts in the comments.

When it Comes to Child Care, Quality Matters!

10/18/2016

A Message from The Child Care Council of Westchester
Childcare
When it comes to choosing child care, there are a variety of factors to consider. Cost and location come to mind immediately for most, but there’s much more to the decision, and a lot riding on it. The quality of early care and education a child receives between birth and age 5 will determine how much his or her brain grows during that time – and as 80% of brain growth is complete before kindergarten, this time is absolutely critical.

In fact, whether or not a child has the proper experiences in those early years will have a lifelong impact on academics, social/emotional and physical health, career success, and even earnings. Quality early care and education means your child is more likely to graduate from high school on time and attend college… and less likely to engage in risky behavior.

It may be hard for some to believe that children are “born learning,” but in truth every experience helps shape their future. For instance: when infants are spoken to, or watch/listen to a mobile, and when toddlers play with sand or water at a sensory table or have conversations with caregivers - brain cell connections, called synapses, are created.  Synapses that are strengthened through repetition become permanent. The synapses that are not "stimulated" are pruned away. Whether home with parents or in a child care setting, it’s critical that little ones engage in warm, loving interactions with caregivers, and talk, sing, read, play and explore objects and physical space.

So, what is “quality” care?
It means that your child is SAFE in a well-supervised, hazard-free setting; LEARNING through a wide variety of play-based experiences; HEALTHY thanks to nutritious foods, outdoor play and a clean environment; and HAPPY in a friendly, enjoyable setting staffed with warm, well-trained, responsive adults.

To find quality care, start early: 2 months before you’ll need it, if possible. But don’t panic if you need to make a change on short notice, either. There are a lot of options available in Westchester.

First, consider your family’s specific needs and priorities:
  • What days and hours you need coverage
  • If you prefer child care near your home or office
  • If your child may need medication administered by the provider
  • How much can you afford to pay
  • Whether you need care near public transportation or if your child requires transportation to/from care

Think about your child’s specific personality: is s/he comfortable in large or small group settings, very physically active, creative, in need of any special attention and services? With that in mind, consider your own preferences. What qualities in a caregiver are most important to you?

To choose a child care provider, first understand that in New York State there are four types of child care settings regulated by the Office for Children and Family Services (OCFS). The Council recommends parents choose one of these:
  1. Child Care Centers – for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years of age in a non-residential setting
  2. School Age Programs – for children 5 to 12 years old during out-of-school hours
  3. Family Child Care – for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years of age, in a residential setting
  4. Group Family Child Care – similar to family child care; more children may be enrolled when an additional caregiver is present

These and additional options can be reviewed in more detail the Council’s website.

Now you’re ready to make a list of potential providers. The Council offers free comprehensive child care referral services for Westchester parents, in English and Spanish. Call (914) 761-3456 x140 to speak directly to a Child Care Specialist who can answer your questions and conduct a database search. They can also help you check whether or not a provider has any history of violations, and talk with you about ways to pay for care, including whether you qualify for a public child care subsidy. Alternatively, you can visit www.childcarewestchester.org/services/parents/find-care to access the online database 24/7 or submit an electronic form to request information.

Once you’ve identified a few potentials, call and ask some basic questions:
  • Is there an opening for my child?
  • What is the daily program/routine?
  • Does the provider follow a curriculum?
  • What are the qualifications (education and experience) of the providers?
  • Is there much staff turnover?
  • How many children does the provider care for/what is the class size?
  • What are the ages of the children in the group?
  • What are the fees, and what do they include?
  • What are the hours? What happens on holidays and vacation days?
  • Is the provider accredited by a national organization?

Next, you should visit the providers you are most interested in, to get a feeling for each in person. We recommend you visit at least three, allow 30-45 minutes per visit, and go at a time when children are present so you can observe how staff interact with them.

Before you go, visit http://childcarewestchester.org/services/parents/how-to-choose to download our free checklists to bring with you.

As you’re looking, trust your instincts! If you speak or visit with one that seems “off,” don’t be afraid to walk away.  Here are some specific things to watch out for:

If the provider…
  • doesn’t want you to visit or answer specific questions about the program
  • seems angry, frustrated or overwhelmed by the children
  • seems inattentive or uninvolved

If the environment…
  • appears dirty or unsafe
  • appears to use televisions, playpens or walkers to excess
  • has limited or inaccessible materials

After your visit(s), feel free to call the Council again to discuss your findings and options. Remember – quality early care and education can set the stage for your child’s entire life, and our expertise and resources can help you make the best decision for your child and family.

Best and Worst Halloween Treats for Kids Teeth by Westchester Dentist Dr. Sabrina Magid Katz

10/10/2016

Picture
Dr. Sabrina Magid Katz of Advanced Dentistry of Westchester Offers Advice on Healthy Treat Alternatives to Give to Kids on Halloween.

Every Halloween, kids take joy in trick-or-treating and revel in the many great treats they collected. You’re not going to be able to stop them from getting the candy, but when trick-or-treaters come to your door this year, you can provide healthy alternatives that can also be a big hit.

Joy in Toys. Small toys available in online catalogs are great options and don’t have to break the bank. Kids love playing with toys as much as they love eating candy and they last longer too.

Healthy Snacks Also Taste Good. This year, we are giving out spry mints and gum which help to prevent tooth decay. This treat should not be given out in large quantities and should not be given to very young children. Other healthy alternatives include little packs of carrots and pretzels. Parents will appreciate that you went the extra step to provide a healthy treat.

Choose Candy Wisely. If you have to give out candy, dark chocolate is a much healthier option and is better for your teeth then other candies. Avoid sticky and sour candy, which helps to dissolve teeth. Avoid fruit by the foot, it’s like gluing sugar to your teeth!

Remember, let your kids eat as much candy as you want on Halloween night but the next day make sure it’s out of the house. Stay safe and never eat unwrapped or unsealed candy. Although horseplay is part of Halloween, a little common sense avoids traumatic injury.

A Look at Local Author, Andrew Kranichfeld, Who Teaches Us How Love Makes a Garden Grow

10/6/2016

We were pleasantly surprised when local author Andrew Kranichfeld contacted us about his children’s book, Karen’s Garden. The book was written as a tribute in his mother’s memory, and as a way to pass her love of gardening onto a new generation of young readers. Karen was well known in the community of Rye, New York for her beautiful garden. She shared space in her greenhouses, as well as an assortment of fresh vegetables, with family, friends, and even some local businesses.

In addition to the book, Andrew has quite an inspirational story to tell. Just a few weeks after Karen’s death in March of 2010, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The tumor, and several subsequent misdiagnoses, would eventually leave Andrew blind. But it was in his darkest moment that he remembered his mother and how she bravely fought leukemia for over eight years. It took him a while to adjust to blindness and learn about the adaptive technology that he now uses everyday on his iPhone, iMac, and other devices. It was this very technology that allowed him to write and edit his first children’s book.

Since writing Karen’s Garden, Andrew has visited over fifty schools all over the Northeast, many in Westchester County and the Bronx. He shares the book and it’s themes of gardening, family, generosity, and growth. In addition, he tells the students that just about anything is possible, despite personal limitations and disabilities. For example, Andrew has learned to play the piano, a favorite past time of his mother Karen.

In December, 2016, Andrew completed his second children’s book, Oliver Saves the Nature Center. Andrew hopes that the new book will help instill a love of nature and the environment in his young readers. The “Oliver” in his book is based on his real life brother, who was an environmental educator at the Rye Nature Center for over five years. The new book features beautiful water color paintings done by his friend and local artist Sally Tobin. It also has a crossword puzzle, word search, glossary, and an I-spy for Oliver’s childhood imaginary friend, Jake the leprechaun.

If you are interested in purchasing either book, or would like to inquire about Andrew visiting your child’s school, please visit www.andrewkranichfeld.com. Learn more about Andrew and his books  by watching the videos below.
