Your Next DIY Obsession: Stretchy Bracelets

5/18/2016

Stretchy bracelets have come back into style for all ages and they are easier than ever to make! Bead Everything is a new bead store in Westchester and they have all the supplies you need to make your own trendy bracelets.  Check out their step by step guide for this bracelet and channel your inner creative-self this Spring!
Here are the materials you will need to make the bracelet:
  • Stretch Magic Stretchy Cord .7mm
  • G.S. Hypo Cement Glue
  • A Pair of Cutters or Scissors
  • A Pair of Flat Nose Pliers
  • Beads- 8mm Semi Precious Stones, Amazonites are used in the demonstration
  • A Charm/Focal Piece. A Sterling Silver Hammered Bar is used in the demonstration
  • A Crimp Cover
  • A Bead Board

1. The average stretchy bracelet is 7." You will use the top channel on a bead board to measure the length of your design.

2.    Design away!

3.  A piece of tape is helpful to use to stop beads from falling off the cord once strung- believe me...it happens more than you'd think!
Picture
4. String the beads onto the cord!

5. Double check that the bracelet will be long enough to fit your wrist. The bracelet in the photo was too short so I added two more beads to each side. You can remove the tape to do this but be careful your beads don't slip away!
Picture
6. Once the bracelet is at its desired length, you will need to tie two square knots to finish it off.
Picture
7. Put the right end on top of the left end, then tuck the right end under the left end.
Picture
8. Repeat this knot but start with the opposite side than what you started with. Put the left end over the right end.
Picture
9. Tuck the left end over the right end. Now you will see the "square" of the square knot!
Picture
10. Once you see the square, pull very tight! It is unlikely that you will snap the cord.
Picture
11. Use your glue to cover your knots. In a pinch, you can use clear nail polish instead of glue! Wait at least twenty minutes for the glue to set.
Picture
12. Cut the ends off of your bracelet but be careful not to cut the knot!
Picture
13. Crimp Covers are a little piece of metal that kind of looks like a clam shell. They can be used to cover the knot and they appear to be just another bead!
Picture
14. Cover your knot with the crimp cover. If you would like, you can fill the middle of the crimp cover with Hypo-Cement. This glue will bond to the cord and the metal.
Picture
15. Viola! You have just created a beautiful, trendy bracelet.

This is also a great project to do with kids! Bead Everything has little letter beads and fun colors that kids will love. You can even use wooden beads and Onyx to create a simple bracelet for men.
