New Year's Resolutions: 4 Books to Get You Inspired

1/4/2021

Picture
2020 was quite a year.  But it is now behind us (ahhh... big sigh of relief). A new year feels like a fresh start. A clean slate. And now more than ever that feels GOOD!

Many of us enjoy making New Year's resolutions as a way to look forward, establish better habits, improve areas of our life that we want to work on, focus on our health, and jump start our ambitions. New year, new you, right?!

Over the course of this pandemic I immersed myself in the world of self-help books to find some inspiration, motivation, entertainment and guidance to make life feel a little more opportunistic. A little more in control. A little less overwhelming. Reading stories about others overcoming obstacles, having life altering experiences and finding love can be so inspiring.

I discovered four books that really filled me up. They taught me a lot. Made me laugh. Made me cry. Gave me epiphanies. Helped me let go of past disappointments. Uncovered ways to be the best mom I can be. Motivated me to start taking care of ME. Gave me the courage to accept that there are things I do not like and have the power to change... NOW. Perhaps they will bring the same comfort and inspiration to you. And give you the tools and guidance to build your own resolutions for a transformational 2021.

I'm sure many of the moms out there struggle to find the time to read. I struggle with that too. So I found a way to combine exercise and books by listening to them while walking or jogging. You can also listen to them in the car or at home if you find that convenient.

Check out these four books to get you inspired to develop your New Year's resolutions, start making positive changes and pave the way for— what might just be— the best year of your life.

Happiness

Picture
"It's about living in the moment and appreciating the smallest things. Surrounding yourself with the things that inspire you and letting go of the obsessions that want to take over your mind. It is a daily struggle sometimes and hard work but happiness begins with your own attitude and how you look at the world.”
― Gretchen Rubin

While the The Happiness Project isn't a new book (written in 2009), it is a long-standing best seller and shows up in any list when searching for books about happiness.

The story guides you through one mother's quest to find happiness and the actions she takes to achieve it over the course of a year. Her story is heart warming, entertaining, relatable, and inspiring.

The book is very well researched and written, pulling you into a delightful journey of self-discovery. Gretchen's process of defining monthly resolutions and uncovering "splendid truths" can become yours. Her "happiness" ideas will inspire you to create your own. Just layer in your personal values, goals and interests.

Have you ever heard the famous parenting quote "The days are long but the years are short"? It came from this book.

Love & Marriage

Picture
“For love, we will climb mountains, cross seas, traverse desert sands, and endure untold hardships. Without love, mountains become unclimbable, seas uncrossable, deserts unbearable, and hardships our lot in life.”
― Gary Chapman

This is an oldie but a goodie! The 5 Love Languages was written back in 1992 but is still totally relevant today.

The author, an experienced marriage counselor, distills down all of the ways of expressing and receiving love into five different "love languages."

Why does this matter? Because everyone gives and receives love differently. Identifying a "primary love language" can help you decode how to make your partner feel loved and how you want to be loved. And with all of this time together, it is more important than ever to feel connected and loved.

What is your love language? Gifts? Quality time together? Acts of service? Physical touch? Words of affirmation? Whatever it is, knowing yours and your lover's can dramatically improve how you communicate and enjoy your life together.

I found this book to be illuminating, intriguing and entertaining. Dr. Chapman's engaging and true stories illustrate the critical need for love and how identifying and catering to someone's love language can radically strengthen and improve your relationship.

Career

Picture
If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.”
― Jen Sincero

The book You Are a Badass can be a game changer. Written by Westchester County native Jen Sincero, this book gives you step-by-step instructions to start making some serious improvements to your life NOW.

Her edgy tone is inspiring and humorous at the same time. She walks you through the amusing, provocative and sometimes painful stories of her own life experiences and the lessons she gleaned from them. Her advice focuses on loving yourself and believing in yourself. Moving forward and not looking back. Taking action. Not giving up. Surrounding yourself with winners. Working through obstacles. Being determined. Making the reality you want yours.

If you are ready to turn your career ambitions into reality, this book is for you.

Family & Parenting

Picture
“In our attempt to shelter our kids from adversity, we rob them of the opportunity to make decisions, learn from their mistakes, and develop the resilience needed to thrive through the ups and downs of life. This is all done in the name of love—but too much of a good thing can result in kids who always expect to get what they want when they want it.”
― Amy McCready

I consider this book THE parenting manual. The author, Amy McCready, is a parenting genius.

Whether you have toddlers or teens, The Me, Me, Me Epidemic will give you practical
advice to teach independence, healthy attitudes, responsible behavior and decision making. Not to mention how to address bad behavior and when to ignore it.

If you are tired of nagging, yelling, back talk, doing everything for your child (that they are clearly capable of doing on their own... or at least should be) then this book is for you.

Rather than dreading all of this extra time together, start enjoying it with these positive parenting tips and tricks. It will be your secret weapon.
Wishing all of our readers a happy and healthy 2021! You got this.

Plus, should there ever be an emergency, affiliate Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center boasts 88 outstanding sub-specialties and programs and was named the largest provider of pediatric health services in New York State and one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.

This ethos extends to their belief that the best patient is an informed patient, and that patient education is critical to long-term health (not to mention your health as a worried mother!). Whether you have been with Westchester Health for years or are new to the practice, you quickly recognize that their Pediatrics Department truly cares about each and every one of their patients and their families.

They understand the needs of those in our community through our existing relationships with over 60 local non-profits, schools and agencies. Many community members are not aware of the acute need that exists in our community:
  • 21% of residents are food insecure (hungry or at risk for hunger)
  • 12.3% of households live at or below the federal poverty line
  • 28% of children grades K-6 are on free and reduced lunch

Baby Bank provides 6 months of essentials to babies (0-24 months).  The mission is to help families in need keep their babies clean, healthy and happy.

Kids’ Kloset provides children in need with gently used clothing and related items. The mission is to help children in need be happier, boost self-esteem, and face daily challenges by providing hand-picked clothing and essentials that are just right for them. The goal is to ensure that children do not miss school due to lack of appropriate clothing to wear.

Diaper Depot provides a weeks worth of diapers and wipes each month to families in need. The mission is to ensure no family has to endure diaper deprivation.  The goal is to improve the physical and emotional health of families and babies, as well as allowing caregivers the ability to place babies in daycare.

Literacy Library provides books to families and school districts in under-resourced communities. The mission is to provide books to children. The goal is to provide every family in need and every classroom in the County with a sufficient supply of age-appropriate books for their libraries.

Get Into the Giving Spirit With Lifting Up Westchester

12/9/2020

Picture
The pandemic has been a hardship unlike any other to many in Westchester County (and all over the world). Our neighbors, friends, teachers and other community members are facing overwhelming challenges during this unprecedented, uncertain time. Many have lost jobs, endured illness and are therefore struggling to meet basic needs like paying rent, putting food on the table and clothing their children.

It’s easy to get so caught up in both the joys and obligations of the holidays that we lose sight of what they really mean. Giving back can be an extremely rewarding and memorable experience for you and your child. By helping others who aren’t as fortunate, kids can better see all the remarkable things to be grateful for in their own lives. In fact, giving back can be more rewarding than receiving lots of presents.

Right now you can make a remarkable difference by giving to Lifting Up Westchester. They are offering safe, easy ways to share the joy of the holiday season with families who could truly use a miracle right now. Why not spread a little holiday cheer this year?

What is Lifting Up Westchester?

Lifting Up Westchester (LUW) restores hope to Westchester County’s men, women and children in need by providing them with food, shelter and support—and lifting them to greater self-sufficiency with dignity and respect.

For four decades, Lifting Up Westchester has worked to permanently change the lives of our neighbors in crisis by finding them stable, long-term, housing and providing the support they need to rebuild their lives. We serve approximately 3,500 Westchester residents each year through four key program areas: Emergency Food & Shelter, Housing Stabilization, Vocational Training & Employment, and Next Generation Educational Opportunities.

How Can You Help?

Picture
There are many ways you can support LUW’s mission to help neighbors in need this holiday season and year-round.

1. Food Donations

4,000 Holiday Meals Needed
Due to the pandemic, LUW cannot accept  food donations but they still need our help. You can help by donating virtual food bags  for our hungry and homeless neighbors… because everyone deserves a joyous holiday season.

DONATE HOLIDAY MEALS

In lieu of pre-packed Holiday Grocery Bags, neighbors in need will receive gift cards to purchase holiday meals. Any excess funds donated will be used to provide weekday meals at Grace's Kitchen.

Donate-A-Bag Company Challenge
Now through December 18th, companies from around the County will participate in Lifting Up Westchester's friendly virtual competition to help provide 4,000 Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's meals for hungry and homeless neighbors.

This is the perfect holiday team building opportunity for employees… a chance for them to connect, compete and have fun this holiday season even if they’re working remotely.

PLUS you can compete against other local companies to see who can donate the most money for virtual grocery bags and win the Golden Grocery Bag Award!

SIGN UP FOR THE DONATE-A-BAG CHALLENGE

2. Holiday Toy Gifts

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, make today the day you give holiday joy to a child in need.

You can help provide 200 gifts for children in need this holiday season.
GIVE HOLIDAY TOY WISHES

You can purchase gift cards for homeless & at-risk teens who are often forgotten during the holidays.
GIVE GIFT CARDS FOR TEENS

You can make a donation in honor of someone special. We'll send them a card to tell them you did!

Minding Your Mental Health- Self Care Tips for Moms to Cope With the Pandemic

12/4/2020

Picture
Life is full of challenges these days, one thing for certain, making time for self-care doesn't always seem like the priority.

As moms we are dealing with homeschooling, the pandemic, the holidays and trying to keep up with everyday responsibilities. This can feel, well, overwhelming. Under normal circumstances mothers are faced with multiple demands, but the duration and chronic nature of this situation is unprecedented.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I provide counseling, spending my days helping others navigate through the stressors of life. Recently, I find myself wondering if I have enough emotional energy to do the same for myself.  On a typical day I am trying to work from home, stopping constantly to help my children, juggling laundry, dishes, the dog etc. etc. But recently I began asking myself how am I caring for me?  What do I need to be able to be available for my family?
Merry Deal Days Are Here! Now through Dec. 20th!
This reminded me of the instructions given when flying on an airplane, put your oxygen mask on first before you place it on your children. At first that order seems wrong.  When it is symbolic of something, we all must do before we can help anyone else.  When we are sleep deprived, hungry, stressed or worn down we don't have much left to give.

Self-care is not a treat we give ourselves as a reward; it should be part of our everyday, a moment we take to refuel to go the distance and be our best self. So, prioritize making time for you. Here are a few other quick tips.

  • Take care of your physical needs- Make sure you get enough sleep, eat nutritiously, and find ways to move your body regularly.

  • Practice gratitude- Each day, take a few minutes to think about the things in your life you are thankful for. Try a guided gratitude meditation cultivate gratitude during the holidays  and  guided gratitude meditation.

  • Surround yourself with positive people- Make sure you’re spending time with people who support your goals and encourage you when times are tough.

  • Do mini check-ins several times a day- Throughout the day, take a few deep breaths and do a quick body scan. Notice and release tension and ask yourself what you can do in that moment to care for your needs.

  • Ask for help when you need it- Don’t overthink it. Be specific, clear and direct and ask for what you need.

  • Be kind to yourself- We are all doing the best we can, in this moment in time. Ask yourself, would I ever speak to a friend the way I  am speaking to myself? If not, change it.

What Is Codeverse and Why It Will Be Your New Favorite Holiday Activity

12/1/2020

Picture
With “home for the holidays” taking on a whole new meaning this year, our favorite seasonal activities are going to look different but that doesn’t mean they still can’t be awesome!

Codeverse just launched their Gift of Code program and it is the perfect activity for your kids through this holiday season.  Gift of Code with Codeverse is a free 2 month program that will teach your kids the foundations of coding through holiday themed challenges and events.

Picture
The first reason we love this program is that it is FREE, fun, and holiday themed!  Once you sign up (here) you will get a free account to their interactive online coding platform.  Through “Missions”, step-by-step instructive tutorials, your kid will start creating their very own apps and games that can be shared to any cell phone number once they are done!

Codeverse will help your kid create holiday themed games that you can customize and send to your friends and family as holiday cards!

Picture
Picture
Picture
Another reason we love this program is that it is educational and makes screen time smarter. If you are like me, you know that coding is important but don’t really know what it is! Well, coding is the language that a computer reads to know what to do next. Not only is coding an important skill that our kids will definitely need to know for their future but it helps them learn skills like problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity.  Finally coding will help your kid practice their reading, math, science, and typing skills while they are on holiday break.

Gift of Code with Codeverse will help keep your kid entertained, engaged, and learning through this holiday season and you will be able to share and brag about their creations to friends and family!  Overall it is a win, win, win and we can’t wait to see what your kids create with code!

9 Ways To Energize Your Business in a Pandemic

12/1/2020

Picture
Times are tough for businesses right now. We get it because we are one too. Businesses of all sizes have been negatively impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the current market can feel discouraging there are multiple ways to break through the clutter, gain new customers, get support and make the most of this unprecedented time
Here are some tips to keep your business moving forward during this challenging time:

  • APPLY FOR LOANS & GRANTS- Take advantage of government (federal, state and local) and private sector programs including grants and loans. Helpful links include: SBA Coronavirus Relief Options, Federal Grants, NY State COVID-19 Loans & Assistances to Small Businesses, Westchester County Business FIRST, US Chamber of Commerce Save Small Initiative.

  • STAY CURRENT- Make sure your website is always up to date— include  your current COVID-19 health and safety measures, your store hours, curbside pickup details and your latest offerings. If you do not have a website you can do this through a Facebook Page, social posts and emails.

  • LIST YOUR BUSINESS- Sign up for free business listings on Google Places, Yahoo! Local and Bing. Also take advantage of local directories and resources like the Business Council of Westchester and your local Chamber of Commerce.

  • LEVERAGE SOCIAL MEDIA- Set up and optimize your business profile/page on each network that makes sense for your business— consider Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Tik Tok and Pinterest. Build a following by posting regularly and tagging where appropriate. Just as important as posting is engaging in other's posts by sharing, liking and commenting. Groups within networks are another great social media tool. Expert tip: you can try to negotiate a "share for share" or giveaway with an influencer or relevant profile and get some free exposure! When it comes to social media, you get what you give.

  • COLLECT & SHARE CUSTOMER OR PRODUCT REVIEWS- Reviews have never been more important! Social proof and online reputation can legitimize your business or product, increase reach and catapult you to success. Key review sites include Facebook, Yelp, Google and the Better Business Bureau. If you don't have any reviews you can get started by asking your top fans or loyal customers to write one for you. Don't forget to leverage reviews on your website, in social media and other touchpoints.

  • MAKE THE MOST OF FREE CHANNELS- Promote your offerings on free community calendars and, if appropriate, distribute press releases. Aim to get free press coverage known as "earned media".

  • ADVERTISE- Broaden your reach and drive awareness with a reputable and partner who aligns well with your target audience. Advertise special offers, upcoming events, programs and classes.

  • USE EMAIL MARKETING- If you are not using email to communicate with customers and prospective customers then you are missing an opportunity. You can start building an email list by using free email software like MailChimp. Set up a sign-up form and start sharing relevant content over email to your subscribers. Emails can be used to promote events, store openings, special offers, purchase status, programming and more.

  • DON'T MISS OUT ON SEO- While paid advertising, social media, and other online platforms can generate traffic to websites, the majority of online traffic is driven by search engines. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results. Depending on your bandwidth, willingness to learn, and the complexity of your website, you could perform some basic SEO yourself. Another option is to hire an expert.

A Review of Westchester's Winter Wonderland Drive-Thru Light Show

11/28/2020

Picture
Westchester's Winter Wonderland drive-thru light show is a holiday treat for people of all ages and religions!
I had the pleasure of attending opening night of Westchester's Winter Wonderland. This year the event has been transformed into a drive-thru light extravaganza. And I loved it.

Located at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla, this event is the perfect way to experience some safe yet festive holiday fun with your family. From the comfort of your car you will travel on a journey through a variety of Christmas and holiday light scenes that blink, twinkle and glow with cheer. You will see Santa, Reindeer, Christmas trees, elves and thousands of glistening holiday lights.

Tickets are required in advance. There are timed entrances but we did end up in a line of cars resulting in a half hour wait (Tip: we entered from the Bronx River Parkway from the south, you may have more luck entering from North Broadway). The good news is that you can enjoy some of the lights from the road while you are waiting— my kids loved seeing the approaching lights from afar and it really helped build excitement for the show. Tuning into the festive holiday music that accompanies the show on your car radio is the perfect touch.

Once we entered, the entire drive took about 20-25 minutes. The lights and characters really were a treat for all of us. Take a look at our slide show to see some highlights.

This pandemic has been brutal and Westchester's Winter Wonderland was the perfect pick-me-up for all of us. The lights really did help us feel the magic of the season and all the joy that it brings.

Tickets are available now on Westchester's Winter Wonderland website. The show runs every evening from November 27 - January 3 (except: Nov 30, Dec 7, Dec 14, Dec 24 & Dec 25).

Early Black Friday Deals: I'm Kind of Obsessed With These (Now Extended to Cyber Monday!)

11/25/2020

Picture
UPDATE: These deals are good through Cyber Monday (11/30)

With all of the COVID out there I have become obsessed with online shopping (as if I wasn't already). My mother asked for wish lists weeks ago since the media keeps telling her that there could be major delays in shipping this year and a huge number of sold-out items (Lysol anyone?). Experts recommend starting your holiday shopping sooner rather than later. "With potential product shortages continuing, if you see something you know you want, go ahead and buy it," Karl Haller, partner and retail industry expert at IBM Global Business Services, advises.

Starting early seems like a good idea. Especially since many retailers are starting their Black Friday sales early this year. That means NOW.

I recently discovered The Paper Store. Their online shop is loaded with some of my favorite brands and items that I normally run all over town getting. Their Black Friday Sale is live already— 20% Off Your Total Purchase! Here are some of my faves from their online store. Deals good through Saturday!

5 Ways to Give Back in Westchester County This Holiday Season

11/23/2020

Picture
At a time when we are all experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings people of all races, faiths, and political views together. Generosity gives everyone the power to make a positive change in the lives of others and is a fundamental value anyone can act on. We have all been struggling in our own ways during this unprecedented time. This holiday season, now more than ever, you can really make a difference to those in need.

Instilling an attitude of gratitude in your child is a gift that lasts a lifetime. Include them in your efforts. When you make time for these simple–yet profound–contributions, your will kids develop a stronger sense of community and connection to service work. They’ll experience the joy that comes from making a difference in someone else’s life. They’ll feel more connected to their families. And they’ll feel more grateful for the things they have.

Here are five ways you can give back in Westchester County this holiday season. Of course there are endless opportunities to contribute. For additional ideas to support our local community, please visit our Giving Back page. Or contact your local school, church, synagogue, community center or town hall for more suggestions.
1. Donate locally with Volunteer New York.
This has been a long year, but it's not over. Giving back in whatever way we can helps strengthen the bonds of our community while providing much-needed compassion and resources to those in need. Volunteer New York provides tons of opportunities to help in person, from home or virtually. This includes things like donating diapers and wipes, assembling & donating food bags for the hungry and volunteering at a nearby food pantry.

2. Participate in #Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity that will take place on December 1, 2020.

People can show their generosity in a variety of ways during GivingTuesday—whether it’s helping a neighbor, advocating for an issue, sharing a skill, or giving to causes, every act of generosity counts. GivingTuesday emphasizes opportunities to give back to communities and causes in safe ways that allow for social connection and kindness even while practicing physical distancing.

3. Help Feeding Westchester feed our local children and families in need during this critical time.

Did you know that 60,000 children in Westchester County live in poverty low enough to federally qualify them to receive free or reduced-price school lunch? This is equivalent to one out of every three school children in the county — a staggering statistic. And school meals may be the only meals these children eat. Many go hungry over the weekend and when school is not in session. Help feed those in need by making a food donation or giving a monetary donation,

4. Donate gifts without having to leave your house to Toys for Tots Westchester.

Toys for Tots Westchester has redefined gift giving this year to ensure health and safely during the pandemic. First, they have partnered with You Give Goods. Simply purchase a gift on their website and they will ship your toy donation directly to Toys for Tots. Second, you can purchase directly from the Toys for Tots Amazon Wish List. Again, items purchased from the list are shipped directly to Toys for Tots Westchester. These items can be purchased until December 19th.

If you prefer to give a monetary donation, you can do so online.  Donations are given to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity. Donations are recognized as deductible for tax purposes. Donations are accepted year round and used to purchase toys where they have shortfalls.

5. Partner with FSW Westchester to Adopt a Family for the Holidays.

FSW’s annual Adopt a Family gift drive makes the holidays brighter for Westchester families who are unable to buy essentials and gifts this holiday season. The holidays can be an extremely difficult time of year for families and children who have been struggling.

Their Adopt a Family drive provides families in need with the holiday of their dreams. They have witnessed families break into tears of joy and disbelief when they have been chosen. The program staff personally delivers the items to each family. It is an amazing experience to witness and be a part of.

How To Make The Best Holiday Photo Card

11/20/2020

Picture
It's that time of year again! With the holidays around the corner, now is the time to start designing your annual holiday card so that you get them and mail them before Santa or Hanukkah Harry arrive.

With all of the latest guidance from NY State and the CDC to avoid gatherings, it seems unlikely we will be able to share the holidays in person with our closest friends and family. As an alternative, cards are a thoughtful way to spread some holiday cheer and stay connected with the ones we love and care about.

A great photo card starts with a great photo. You may have some photos in your library you can use (remember those quarantine shots from the spring you may have done on your doorstep?). Perhaps you have a shoot planned with a local photographer. If you don't have a professional photographer on the way, and you are thrifty like me, you can do your own mini photoshoot at home or a nearby park

Regardless of where your photo will come from, all you need to make a great holiday card is one stunning photo and Minted to spread the holiday cheer.

How To Make the Best Photo Card

Picture
Getting that Magic Photo (or Two)

In my opinion, less is more. One amazing photo for the front of your holiday card can be more magical than a collage of six. There is nothing wrong with showing just the kids (or the new dog if you have one). You can feature the remaining must-have photos on the back of the card if you want to cover additional milestones or family members.

If you are shooting your own (like I did) then you'll want to do a little planning:

  1. Set Up First- Get things set up before grabbing your kids, pets and/or spouse. This will make the actual photo taking a lot quicker and more pleasant for all. It will also ensure you get more high quality photos to choose from.

  2. Get Your Props- Determine if you want to use any special outfits, props or hairstyles. A little styling can go a long way in making the photo feel "holiday card-worthy". So grab those Santa hats, Christmas photo props, dreidels, matching dresses, sparkly pillows or reindeer ears! But don't feel pressured, this is a nice-to-have, not a must-have. Happy faces are more than enough to get the job done.

  3. Find Your Spot- Choose the location you want to use for your shot and make sure it's photo-ready. Personally, I find photos taken outside come out much better— the lighting outdoors seems to do the heavy lifting for me and I don't need to fiddle with the lights to get the brightness I want. Your backyard or a nearby park will do. If you want to take your pictures indoors then make sure the area is properly lit and clean. Take some sample shots with a teddy bear sit in to make sure the space (no Amazon boxes in the background) and lighting work.

  4. Get Your Camera Ready- Don't worry, you don’t need a fancy camera (but if you have one, by all means use that puppy). A smart phone is actually a great camera. Sometimes I take shots on both my Nikon and my iPhone and the iPhone shots come out better. The iPhone gives me an instant glimpse of what I captured so I know if I got the shot I wanted or not instantly (it is much harder to view the shots taken on the much smaller DSLR screen). Make sure your equipment is charged up, memory card is inserted (if necessary), and you are familiar with the settings you want to use.

  5. Get Help- If want a full family shot, ask a friend or neighbor to take the pictures for you (in a mask 6 feet apart of course, they can even use their own phone and send to you). Selfies are cute but are very close up and can be overwhelming on a card. Don't miss out on taking advantage of portrait mode, filters and other features while you are shooting.

  6. Have Fun- Most importantly, have fun! Don't stress your family out with this picture or all you will get is frowning faces (trust me, I have done it). It's okay to ask the kids to throw leaves, make silly faces, or jump on the bed! Get some cute shots of them candid, in the moment. In fact, sometimes those candid shots come out better than the posed ones (photojournalism anyone?). Throw some music on and enjoy!

  7. Full Coverage Is a Must- Shoot horizontal and vertical, close-up and far back. You will want these different options to crop later on the computer. It will give you tons of flexibility to use any template you choose. Look at the example at the top of this article. Do you see how much landscape is on the left to accommodate the text? It is best to get a range of shots covered at the time you take the pictures so you don't need a redo or have to give up on your favorite online template later. Also, don't stop the shoot until you know you have the gold!

Picture
Finding the Right Template
  1. Check out the broad selection of festive holiday card options from Minted — they have a ton of unique, stylish designs from the world’s best independent artists. Their cards are top of the line! Pick your theme from the menu of choices including holiday, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years and more. To find the right template quickly try filtering— select the number of photos you have, orientation (vertical or horizontal), the size and shape of the card and more. If you want something glitzy, check out the foil pressed cards. You can choose from gold, silver, rose gold, glittery gold, and glittery silver foil.

  2. Personalize your card and envelope to your liking with your family's name. Take advantage of photo filters, personalization, color schemes and more. Make sure your text is readable against the background.

  3. Make your life easier and opt for return address printing. You may spend a little more money, but it will save you a ton of time and your cards will be returned to you if you have the wrong address for your friends or family.

  4. You can get your sender addresses pre-printed. When using Minted you can get FREE addressing of your card. Select “Printed” recipient addressing on the “Envelopes” step, and choose your envelope design. When you get your holiday cards your FREE custom envelopes will come addressed and ready to send. If you are old school and want to address the cards yourself then at least consider these Avery labels that you can print on your own (versus a pen).

Don't Forget

Get your stamps. If it's one thing I learned since COVID has arrived, it's that the early bird gets the worm. So if you want Hanukkah or Christmas themed stamps don't wait till they are gone (like the Lysol).

Top Tips for Choosing a Sleep-Away Camp in These Challenging Times

11/16/2020

Picture
Do the freezing temperatures have you dreaming of warm summer days? Are you worried about your child’s social and emotional health due to limited time with peers because of COVID restrictions? While summer is still months away, now is the perfect time to plan for summer camp.

While there are questions about exactly how the summer will look, most camps are planning to open this summer and will allow our kids the opportunity to play and bond with friends; an important aspect of child development that has been largely missing from their lives these past 9 months. Choosing the right camp for your child is a big decision.

Below are my top tips for choosing a sleep away camp. I recently went through the same process for my 8 year old and used this criteria.  There’s a lot to consider!

  1. Meet the Directors
The camp directors set the tone for camp and are involved in every aspect of how a camp is run. Make sure you feel comfortable with them and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

  2. Safety First
The safety of a camp is a top priority!  Particularly in these challenging times, you need to feel confident that the camp you choose has a Health and Safety Plan with which you agree.  You want to know:
    - Are their nurses and physicians on the premises?
    - Where’s the nearest hospital?
    - Are kids wearing appropriate safety equipment for sports and waterfront activities?
    - How does the camp hire and train staff?

  3. Know your Non-Negotiables
Before touring you need to narrow down your options:
    - Do you want a co-ed, single sex or brother sister-camp?
    - Can a camp handle your child’s allergies?
    - Do you want a uniform?
    - What location would you like?
    - Do you prefer a religious affiliation?

  4. Camp Culture
Each camp is a mini world of its own, complete with traditions, history and culture.  Find out:
    - How does the camp handle bullying?
    - How is the homesick child handled?
    - Does the camp emphasize cooperation or competition?
    - Will they have enough food choices for your picky eater?

8 Reasons Little Spoon is the Ultimate Parenting Hack

11/13/2020

Picture
It feels like the phrase "Why didn't anyone tell me this was going to be so hard?!" comes out of our mouths five times a day as parents. When it comes to feeding our little ones, we think about it for every meal. Yes, we all know that nutrition is critical for our children’s healthy development— but between trying to find fresh, nutrient-dense meals to figuring out how to get our kids to actually eat their food, all on top of our daily to-dos, the anxiety can really start to kick in.

Little Spoon was started because of these exact pain points, so when we say we’ve been there, we’ve really been there. We created Little Spoon to make parents’ lives easier, with all of our products delivered right to your door and our community just a click, call, or message away. We know how crucial nutrition is during the first few years of life, and how difficult it can be to get your little to eat what’s good for them, so we do the heavy lifting for you. Our Babyblends and toddler & kid's meals, Plates, are made with recipes that keep nutrition and development top of mind, using only the freshest ingredients and free of preservatives, GMOs, additives, and added sugar.

Here are eight reasons Little Spoon is the ultimate parenting hack:

  1. Delivered right to your door
Put down the kitchenware. Little Spoon delivers fresh, nutrient-dense Babyblends and big kid meals right to your door. We make sure that all your littles, from baby to big kid, are covered at mealtime so you don’t have to.

  2. Nutrient-dense, balanced recipes
Little Spoon works alongside renowned pediatricians and nutritionists to create nutrient-dense, balanced recipes for your little one. We use fresh and diverse ingredients to expose your mini to critical vitamins, minerals, and key nutrients that they need at every step of development. Whether you’re looking for an immunity-boosting Babyblend like our Carrot Apple Ginger blend or veggie-packed Plate like our Broccoli Bites, we’ve got you.

  3. Clean, preservative-free ingredients
Most grocery store kids products have preservatives, added sugars, and other things you can't pronounce. At Little Spoon, making the safest, highest quality food for your little is our priority. That’s why we have a zero-tolerance policy for preservatives, fillers, additives, and heat-processing. Our Babyblends are made using 100% organic, non-GMO ingredients while our Plates include antibiotic and hormone-free protein, non-GMO fruits and veggies, and organic ingredients where it matters most.

  4. Meals for babies AND big kids
Little Spoon is there to cover everything from first bites to big appetites, making it easy for your mini to transition from Babyblends to Plates. Both menus incorporate a wide variety of recipes made for all developmental stages, so that your mini can eat right every step of the way.

  5. Say goodbye to picky eaters
From babyhood to big kid and every phase in between, Little Spoon is here to help your kiddo develop a diverse palate. Even from your babe’s very first bites, it’s vital to expose them to a robust array of flavors, textures, and foods. Our Babyblends are carefully crafted with over 100 ingredients, with options for every type of eater. Starting with our single-ingredient blends such as Pear or Zucchini will help prime your babe for the more complex blends that incorporate flavors like mint, spirulina, and hemp like our ever-popular Sweet Potato Apple Blueberry Flax blend. Introducing complex flavors helps expand your little’s palate until they’re ready to dive into our veggie-packed toddler meals. Our Plates menu offers everything from kid classics like Chicken Super Nuggets to adventurous toddler meals like Cheesy Black Bean Pupusas, packed with veggies and superfoods in every bite.

  6. Clean line of vitamins and natural remedies
From iron deficiency to cold prevention and constipation, Little Spoon’s line of clean vitamins and natural remedies was created to give your kiddo that extra boost. Sneak our easy-to-use powder formulas into your mini’s Babyblends, breast milk, water, you name it; say hello to your new superpower.

  7. Online community of mamas who like to get real
