The Bronx Zoo’s Holiday Lights, a family-favorite holiday light experience, is returning to the Bronx this year to bring light and joy to the holiday season. The event will take place on select dates from November 20 to January 10 with a WCS member preview November 17-19. Tickets for Holiday Lights must be purchased in advance and are available online.

For safety, this year’s experience will be more spread out to accommodate social distancing and better organized to eliminate bottleneck areas. Even bigger and better this year, the zoo will have nearly 50 more animal lanterns this year and five geographically representative lantern safaris that include species from around the world.

During your safe, and leisurely tour, you can also enjoy holiday-themed music, ice carving demonstrations, costumed characters, stilt walkers, souvenirs, and seasonal sweets like hot chocolate and s’mores.

“2020 has been a trying year for all of us and has once again shown the resiliency of New York City and New Yorkers,” said Jim Breheny, Bronx Zoo Director and WCS Executive Vice President for Zoos & Aquarium “The city has always been the center of the holiday universe, and The Bronx Zoo’s Holiday Lights will help bring a sense of normalcy to the city. The experience is all outdoors and appropriately designed to accommodate social distancing."

For safety, all events and activities have been modified to meet all safety guidelines as directed by the State of New York. All guests over 3 years old are required to socially distance and wear face coverings, and all tickets are date-specific and must be purchased in advance online. You Won't Believe How Much There is to Do This Fall in Westchester

9/24/2020

Picture
Fall is in full swing and it is a beautiful time to be outside in Westchester County, NY! Here are some ideas to enjoy it (safely).

Do you love fall foliage? Take a scenic drive. The I Love NY Fall Foliage Report provides weekly updates on where to see the best color changes in the state.

Plan a weekend day trip to the free, socially-distanced Orange County Drive-Thru Fair Food Festival. From Sept 24–27 and Oct 1–4, you and your family can venture up to the fairgrounds to enjoy all the sweets your heart desires. Drivers will receive a map, a menu and guided through set route of the grounds.

Head to a farm to enjoy socially distanced apple picking, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and more fall activities.

Bike along the Bronx River Parkway this Sunday!

If you are comfortable with playgrounds, you will be happy to hear that Westchester County Parks announced today that twelve of their playgrounds will officially reopen for the season on Saturday, September 26.

Do you love nature? Explore, take a hike, see the animals and savor the delights of nature at a nearby nature center. Did you you know Westchester County Parks Nature Centers are offering early learning programs for Pre-K and second through fifth grade aged children, operating outdoors? Check it out.

If you love animals, the Bronx Zoo is open but tickets must be purchased in advance. Don't forget your costume for Boo at the Zoo!

Halloween is coming soon. There are some attractions that will be open this year with special safety precautions like advance reservations, masks, distancing and an all outdoor experience. As for trick or treating, Governor Cuomo will allow it but the CDC is recommending against it. According to them, pumpkin carving at home or outside at a distance from others, participating in a virtual costume contest or having a "scavenger hunt-style trick-or-treat search" at home rather than trick or treating are all considered lower risk.

As openings keep progressing, a few noteworthy city museums are opening their doors like the American Museum of Natural History and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum opening tomorrow (see a full list of museums here). In NJ, the American Dream reopens October 1st, including the grand opening of Dreamworks Water Park.

This has been a difficult time for everyone. If you are looking for support for yourself or someone else, or want to give back, check out our Give Back page for ideas.

Wishing all of our readers a safe, fun filled and healthy fall!

Children’s mental health impacts all of us – every community, every school, and every family is touched by it in some way. Nearly 30% of parents report that removing children from social environments due to the Coronavirus/COVID-19 has had a negative effect on their children’s mental health and wellbeing. Returning them to a school year full of unknowns means they need even more mental health supports than ever.

Although this year's ride will look different, your support is needed now more than ever. Help us raise awareness, fundraise, and ride to help young New Yorkers thrive. From September 13th to the 30th, join us for:
  • Online workshops where mental health professionals discuss children’s mental health and answer your questions.
  • A tour of a children’s residential program with staff discussing how they’re help children thrive during COVID-19
  • An exciting closing celebration where we’ll thank you, share how your support is helping young New Yorkers thrive, and celebrate the top teams and individuals.

Where Does the Money Raised Go?
Funds raised through Cycle of Support go to The Jewish Board, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children of all religions, ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and gender identifications across the five boroughs of New York City and Westchester. These critical programs:
  • Provide abused kids who can’t live at home, a safe and supportive residence to recover
  • Protect children who have experienced domestic violence and get them on a path to recovery
  • Develop stronger, healthier parent and child relationships through counseling services
  • Fund services to keep children with their families that are facing challenges
  • Ensure kids can go to school and focus on learning in a positive environment.
  • Fund different early childhood centers from Harlem to Brownsville and Coney Island, so that parents can build strong and safe bonds with their children
  • Ensure that children get the psychiatric treatment they need when they are facing serious mental illnesses
  • Empower us to proactively address one of NYC’s major health challenges: access to high-quality mental health services.

We hope you’ll join us and hundreds of others who want to ensure children throughout our area feel safe, secure, and supported.

Tickets are already in pre-sale for members and Twitter followers. Tickets officially go on sale tomorrow, August 25. The Blaze is a very popular event that typically sells out and requires advance purchase tickets so if you are interested this is the time to reserve yours.  Tickets are $32 per child (3-17) and $40 per adult.

Located at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze is a breathtaking display of more than 7,000 illuminated jack o’lanterns. This year the event runs from September 18- October 31; November 1; 6-8; 13-15; 20-21.

The Blaze is operating in strict compliance with New York State-issued “Low-Risk Outdoor Arts & Entertainment Guidelines.”
To ensure the safety and enjoyment visitors, Historic Hudson Valley is limiting capacity. By purchasing a ticket, visitors agree to follow our COVID Courtesy Code, which includes wearing a mask and maintaining at least six feet of social distance.

New this year, tickets are exchangeable to another date/time slot if that date/time has availability, up to 72 hours in advance of your reserved time slot. There is a $2 per ticket exchange fee.

If you have not been to this before, you could equate it to the New York Botanical Garden's Holiday Train Show in the sense that this is a seasonal display of sculptures built out of plants, in this case pumpkins. What makes this event even more spectacular is the nighttime ambiance, featuring synchronized lighting and thousands of glowing pumpkins. Amazingly, all of the displays, including 7,000 hand-carved jack o’lanterns, are designed and hand-carved on site.  New for 2020, a fire truck—making a special rescue—and witches stirring up a spell.

Unlike many other Halloween spectaculars and events, this one is very family friendly and appropriate for kids and adults of all ages-- assuming your children can handle staying up. For the early birds, you could consider going later in the season when the sun sets earlier and show times begin as early as 6:00pm. There are no scary zombies or haunted creatures lurking in the shadows. You can walk through the entire display in about 30-45 minutes. Enjoy!

Only the Best for Your Kids – Naturally Safe Wooden Toys

7/29/2020

Picture
Your kids deserve toys that grabs their attention, spark the imagination, and keep them occupied. When you start to look at wooden toys for toddlers, you may get a bit of sticker shock. Wait just a minute! Why should you pay more for a single toy than you could for a whole pile of plastic, mass-produced ones?

Think back to the last time your son or daughter had a lot of toy options to play with. Did they use all of them the same? Or did they reach for their favorites again and again? There's something about a few special toys that really gets their attention and keeps them occupied so you can claim some mommy time for yourself.

Think about it for a minute. You want your little ones to have fun, but you also want to make smart buying decisions that focus on-quality favorites instead of piles of stuff that spreads out all over your house. Wooden toys for toddlers are the answer.
Picture
Best of all, all-natural wood toys are safer and more environmentally friendly than plastic. Toddlers and preschool aged children do not need garish plastic toys that beep, blink, and break way too soon. What they do need is long-lasting, healthy toys that spark the imagination and deliver plenty of fun while they learn.
Picture
No More Plastic – Choose Wooden Toys for Toddlers

So, you may be able to buy five cheap plastic toys for the same price as one quality wooden one. While it may seem like more is better, plastic checks all the boxes on the no-no list when it comes to playthings.

Did you know that a lot of plastic used to make toys contains chemicals like BPA, PVC, and phthalates that the FDA says our potential health hazards? These are the last things you want your babies chewing on and touching all day long. The risk goes up even more if you buy from countries with looser quality controls.

Nothing is more important than your kids health, right? What about their future?

Plastic is a leading polluter that is destroying natural ecosystems all around the world. If you opt for wooden toys instead, you are doing something great for your kids today and tomorrow. Help them learn how to make the world the best place possible with smart buying decisions.

Natural is best when it comes to babies. You buy organic cotton outfits and wash with hypoallergenic soaps. Why would you turn around and put potentially damaging plastic in their little hands? Wooden toys for toddlers offer sturdy, colorful, and long-lasting toys that are healthy and tons of fun.
Picture
Not All Wooden Toys Are Safe

Unfortunately, you still have to be careful about where you buy the wooden toys. Can you believe that some unscrupulous companies lie about natural toys and end up making unsafe ones instead? Just imagine how awful it would be if your adorable son or daughter got a big splinter or scrape. It would be even worse if their favorite plaything, which they put in their mouth like most little kids do, was covered with toxic paint, stain, or sealants.

Invest in quality. Buy from trusted sources that stand behind their products. When you choose the highest quality wooden toys for toddlers, even the most well-loved favorites can last for generations.

As a local mom, I understand the importance of choosing the best products for our little ones. As a small business owner, I made it my mission to provide the highest quality, natural wooden toys to other parents who want the best for theirs.

At Poppy Baby Co., we use old-time inspiration to create modern toys that young kids love. Visit the shop and enjoy a 15% discount on your next purchase of naturally fun wooden toys with the promo code “WESTCHESTERMOM.”

5 Things You Should Look for in a Performing Arts Program for Your Child

6/20/2020

Picture
Participation in the performing arts, especially starting at a young age, helps children develop crucial life skills such as creative thinking and problem solving, empathy, communication, confidence, public speaking, and more. Not to mention it’s a ton of fun! With a multitude of companies to choose from, what should parents look for when choosing a performing arts program for their children? Jill Abusch, Artistic Director of The Play Group Theatre in White Plains, and her staff discuss the 5 elements that are paramount to selecting a performing arts program that will set children up for success both on the stage and off.

1. Room to Grow
Look for a program that has diverse offerings - you want a theatre community that is thinking not only about who your child is today, but who they can grow into tomorrow! As students grow, so should the programs available to them, including age-appropriate exploration that encourages growth at every stage of development. “Students that participate in multiple years or seasons at The Play Group Theatre gain a wide range of experiences working with peers of all ages, performing in both musicals and plays, participating both onstage and off, and being in large ensembles and small. They are constantly exposed to new adventures and environments,” says Hannah Stephens, a director and teaching artist in both the MainStage and Theatre Lab programs at PGT.

A theatre that is providing your child with room to grow is investing meaningfully in the creative process. Jill Abusch, PGT’s Artistic Director, says that you should look for programs that promote active exploration and experimentation, allowing time for one of the most crucial lessons of the performing arts: embracing failure as a step to success! And make sure that those programs are providing opportunities for creative and developmental growth. “I just love to watch our students grow from an early experience, like playing a Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz through learning advanced text and character analysis and ultimately doing plays like The Crucible or The Tempest. Or seeing a student who had a blast in the cast of Shrek, develop a new interest in sound design, and move from the stage to the tech booth. We are constantly assessing our students’ growth and providing new challenges. And ultimately we get to look back at where they’ve come from, on a journey filled with a range of diverse experiences, and that is part of what makes them such an interesting artist!” says Abusch. Experience in an array of theatre disciplines allows students to appreciate the craft as a whole and gain a deep understanding of everyone’s role in the theatre. This leads to a greater respect for both the art form and their peers and mentors.

2. A Non-competitive Environment
With great friends comes great theatre. Students can, and should, experience rigorous and professional training, without feeling the need to compete with their friends and peers for opportunities. The stronger the bonds between students are off stage, the more powerful and impactful the work will be on stage. With a strong, supportive network of teachers, friends, and audiences, students feel the freedom to perform and express themselves without feeling any judgement. “PGT friendships last a lifetime, in part, due to the fact that PGT students are always encouraged to support each other,” says Daniel Goldberg, PGT alumni and Camp PGT staff member.  Because the theatre can be a competitive place, a sense of community and non-competitiveness has to be intentionally fostered by teachers and directors. One way this environment can be created is through the very structure of the program itself.  If a theatre is offering a diverse array of performance opportunities, rather than double casting a single show, then they are more likely to ensure that each student has access to the roles that are right for them. Double casting, which involves casting multiple students in the same part, places the gratification of the casting process over the overall artistic and educational experience of the production. When multiple students have to share a role, the results are often product-oriented, with the emphasis naturally shifting to a more competitive environment. Instead, “The Play Group Theatre teaches students to approach every single role like a lead role and reminds every actor that they are all equally responsible for the success of the show,” says Goldberg, who has seen the benefits of this approach both as a student and a member of the staff. When every actor feels a sense of responsibility and pride in the process, the finished product is one of great depth, and becomes much more rewarding and victorious for everyone involved. By giving students the tools to make any role stand out and feel important, regardless of number of lines or the size of the part, teachers and directors send their students out into the world with a strong ability to adapt to any circumstance and creatively make the most of any situation.

Picture
3. Emphasis on Making Choices, and Skill Development
While the joy of a great performance is exciting for everyone involved, what parents should search for in their arts program, in addition to quality productions, is emphasis on the creative process, which develops the life skills that children will carry with them into their adult lives. Outside of the arts, students are used to having access to all of the information in the world at their fingertips and are comfortable using google or their textbooks to find the “right” or “wrong” answer to every question. In the creative process, there are an unlimited number of “right” answers to any given question and students learn to explore and unlock many of them before settling on their own unique and specific choice. The arts is all about making strong choices, and it becomes an artist’s job to embrace the choices that are right for them and only them. Look for a program that allows time and space for exploring those choices, rather than a program that focuses on learning lines and staging, which is the least creative aspect of a rehearsal process.  But the time and freedom to make choices isn’t where a good arts education ends. In addition to embracing the power of creative choices, students must also develop the skills to communicate those choices to an audience. Skills like vocal and movement training, acting technique, time management, text analysis, critical thinking, and more empower students to share their unique choices, taking them from the rehearsal room to the stage. Jill Abusch says, “At PGT, we find that when our students find success and comfort in ambiguity and learn to pair their creative ideas with technical ability, they develop crucial skills like creative thinking, problem solving, and confidence in themselves that transform their performances. More importantly it benefits them for the rest of their lives, no matter their chosen career path.”

4. Focus on Empathy and Emotional Development
One of the most important elements that students gain from a quality arts education is the ability to practice empathy and communicate their emotions. The presence of empathy is declining rapidly in our world, just when we seem to need it the most. However, studying theatre during childhood is one proven way to ensure that children grow up understanding what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes and how to look at any given situation from multiple points of view. “At PGT, we ask our students to be both physically and emotionally present in any given moment, taking the time and effort to truly see and connect with each other, their teachers, and the characters they are playing on stage,” says Hannah Stephens. By discussing what motivates each character and what lies behind the choices they make, students are developing empathic skills and using them to find truth in the given circumstances of the imaginary world. Look for theatre programs that strive to cast young actors in roles that are in contrast to their own experiences and personalities, challenging them to understand new feelings, perspectives, and ideas. Empathy is a skill that must be practiced, and it is one that, in the right theatre program, will be a primary focus as students learn to confidently share their feelings, understand their characters, and discover truth in a rich imaginary world. This prepares them to go out into the world as caring, confident, well-rounded artists and people.

Picture
5. A Strong Sense of Community
Children benefit from a strong sense of belonging, freedom from judgement, and a safe place to express themselves. Find a theatre community that welcomes each and every student who walks through their doors, allowing them the space and safety to be silly, creative, and ultimately, themselves. Look for a wide range of classes, taught by instructors from all backgrounds, and a diverse and rich community where students learn to appreciate and embrace everyone’s unique experiences and talents. “In addition to building a community of students, staff and parents, PGT fosters a strong network of alumni and artists that expands beyond the walls of their building and out into the world. Students that join PGT benefit from being part of a community that possesses a strong set of values, traditions, and common goals that stay with its students for the rest of their lives,” says alum and Camp PGT staff member Marina Lebowich. More than just a place to learn and grow as young theatre artists, the theatre you find for your child today, should provide its students with a home that they can always return to, knowing that they will be loved, embraced, and accepted exactly as they are.

Open Parks, Golf, Nature Centers, Beaches and More in Westchester County, NY 2020

5/19/2020

Picture
As our region continues to be "closed" due to COVID-19, summer is quickly approaching and we are all eager to get out and have fun. Thankfully, there are plenty of open places, like parks, hiking trails, nature preserves, golf courses and beaches to have fun in the sun in Westchester County, NY!

"We'll also open certain businesses statewide, which are low risk," Cuomo said in early May. "Landscaping, gardening, low-risk recreational opportunities like tennis, drive-in movie theaters. Talk about going back to the future. Back to drive-in movie theaters."

Please keep in mind that social distancing, CDC, Department of Health and state guidelines are a must. So don't forget your face masks (for now).

IMPORTANT: As information changes regularly, we suggest keeping an eye on these websites for the latest updates regarding outdoor openings and closings:

NY State Parks

To search and find a NY State Park that is right for you,
visit their website. You can search by name, location or amenity.

While indoor spaces and restrooms at State Parks and DEC’s public facilities may be closed to prevent community spread of COVID-19, parks, grounds, forests, and trails are open during daylight hours, seven days a week. Many park facilities including playgrounds, athletic courts/fields, and visitor and nature centers are closed. While enjoying outdoor spaces, please continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/State Department of Health (DOH) guidelines for preventing the spread of colds, flu, and COVID-19.  If you do plan on visiting, visit parks close to home, avoid crowded areas, and wear face coverings where you cannot maintain safe social distance.

For specific guidelines and up to date information, please visit the NY State Parks COVID-19 page on their website.

IMPORTANT: Many parks have reduced parking by 50% and local roads may have closures in effect. The bottom line: if you want to go to a popular park, head out early and know your route.

Westchester County Beaches

Picture
The beaches at Playland and Croton Point parks will open Memorial Day weekend for county residents only.

County Executive George Latimer stated on May 19 "We don't want to have an influx of people coming from a different geography that could overwhelm us. We'll try to manage that process and it will be a reduced capacity," Latimer said. "You may find that the beach is closed when you arrive because we hit the maximum number of people on the beach. We're going to try very hard to maintain a reasonable amount of social distancing as much as we can on a beach. We'll see if that works."

Both beaches will open Friday through the holiday, according to County Executive George Latimer. However, it is not confirmed whether they will remain open for Saturdays and Sundays. It is contingent on beachgoers maintaining proper social distancing. "If they want to enjoy the outdoors, they have to do it at a distance from the next person," Latimer said.

According to LoHud, "the logistics of opening beaches along the Hudson River and Long Island Sound will follow state protocols, Latimer said, with smaller than usual capacity and increased staff to limit crowding. Concession stands will not open and beachgoers must wear masks and stay six feet from others. He said that if the openings are unsuccessful, the beaches could be closed again. If they work out, they will open again each Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Officials would also then look at the possibility of opening county pools — although the closer proximity of swimmers in pools makes it more difficult, the county executive said."

Update May 21, 2020

Westchester Parks Foundation and Westchester County Parks today announced the dates for its 46th Annual Bicycle Sundays 2020 season. The program kicks off on May 3 and continues Sundays in May, June and September – except Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. During this annual event, bicyclists, skaters, joggers and walkers take over several miles of the Bronx River Parkway. The course will be slightly modified this year, beginning at Main Street in White Plains (instead of Westchester County Center) and continue south to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers.

It is recommended that participants wear a mask or a face covering in situations like this where social distancing may not always be able to be maintained.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “We understand the need to strike the correct balance between maintaining important social distance guidelines, and providing people with an escape from the pandemic. We are excited to be able to continue this Westchester County tradition that many look forward to all year long.”

Joe Stout, Executive Director of Westchester Parks Foundation, stated: “Now more than ever we need to #StandUpForParks and the essential service they provide for all Westchester residents. We are thrilled to continue this iconic event that provides a healthy lifestyle and promotes importance of environmental preservation for generations to come. We are grateful to Con Edison for their generous support and commitment to parks and open space.”

Westchester County Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor said: “Seeing Bicycle Sundays return is extremely gratifying. We thank County Executive Latimer for believing in the power of parks to help people get through this challenging time, and we also thank the Parks Foundation and our great sponsors for the funding they provide.”

Bicycle Sundays runs between White Plains and Yonkers. There are numerous points of entry along the route. Although parking will be available in the Westchester County Center east parking lot, participants will follow signs and directions to enter the route at Main Street once they exit their cars. Bicycle Sundays are free and open to the public.

10 a.m. and 2 p.m.:
  • May 3, 10, 17, 31
  • June 7, 14, 21, 28

Bicycle Sundays are a beloved Westchester tradition since 1974. Since 2012, this program has been funded solely by Westchester Parks Foundation and its partners. No public funding goes towards keeping this program going. Each year, more than 60,000 thousand cyclists, joggers and others come out to enjoy the curves and wooded scenery that make the nation’s first parkway a national historic landmark. The path winds alongside the wooded Bronx River Reservation.

Included are dedicated swim program facilities, gyms with swim instruction, community centers and county and town resources. Now, let's dive in!

Benefits of Swimming for Children

Swimming is not only a popular activity for kids, but it is also is a very beneficial one. For starters, learning to swim is essential for safety. According to kidshealth.org, drowning is the second most common cause of death from injuries among kids under the age of 14. Swimming lessons can provide must-have water survival skills training, starting as young as age one.

Second, swimming provides a healthy level of physical activity for children. It can provide cardiovascular activity, a low impact workout and even help with chronic diseases and  mental health. Introducing your child to swimming at a young age will promote a healthy life.

Third, swimming has social and emotional benefits. For little ones, a mommy or daddy and me class can be a bonding experience from child to parent, as well as an opportunity to make new friends. For competitive swimmers, it can instill the value of teamwork and individuality. Swimming can also improve overall mood, and help combat depression, according to the CDC.

Museums & Aquariums for Westchester Kids: The Must-Have List

1/15/2020

Picture
New York Aquarium
Dinosaurs, planets, trains, masterpieces, sharks, illusions, ice cream, water experimentation... these are just a few things your child can experience and learn about at nearby museums and aquariums in Westchester County, NY.

When the weather is not conducive to outdoor activities, museums and aquariums are a hands-on, real-life way to engage your child in learning and fun. Museums are always changing exhibits so there is always something new to see. With some of the best museums in the world in our backyard, we are very fortunate. Kids can enjoy playrooms, maker labs, world-renown art and science exhibits, touch tanks, planetariums and so much more.

One concern parents have about museums is that they can get expensive. Here are some ideas to keep costs low, while keeping your child's spirits high!

Tips to Enjoy Museums For Less

Picture
Here are some tips to enjoy museums without breaking the bank:
  • Become a Museum Member- Museums offer memberships which can be cost-effective if you plan to visit multiple times in a year. This can be huge if there is a museum nearby that your child enjoys again and again. There are typically other perks to memberships like special exhibit access, food & parking discounts and guest passes.
  • Invest in a Reciprocal Membership- Reciprocal memberships give you free or discounted admission to a number of attractions, which is a great way to see a lot on a budget. For example, The Association of Children's Museums Reciprocal Network gives discounted admissions to a vast list of member museums across the US and Canada- a great way to see a lot, especially when traveling. Learn more about  reciprocal programs and see a comprehensive list here.
  • Visit your library- Did you know that local Westchester County libraries offer museum passes that provide free or discounted admissions to local museums in Westchester, Connecticut and New York City? Offers vary by library so contact yours and find out what's available.
  • Museums for All- Through Museums for All, people receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) can gain free or reduced admission to more than 400 museums throughout the US.
  • Do Your Research to Find Freebies- Many museums offer free admission to young children. Must Read: Keep Your Money: How to Get in Free at 20 NYC Museums. And even better, here is a list of 19 Awesome Museums in NYC That Are Totally Free.

New & Coming Soon Museums

Hot off the press!

The only borough in New York City without a children’s museum will be getting one this year. The Bronx Chidren's Museum will be geared toward young children, especially those children and families who are not typically able to visit a museum.

The Museum of Ice Cream opened in late fall 2019 and features imaginative, multi-sensory installations that bring to life guests’ delightful dreams: savor the sweetest treats on a floating table, slide down an epic three-story slide, see a spectacular hall of giant scoops, and follow the sound of a buzz that will lead you to a giant “Queen Bee hive. Tickets include ice cream tastings and signature treats.

Open until April 2020, the Sloomoo Institute is a
sensory playground centered around slime. The unique museum provides an engaging slime experience with a variety of textures, colors and consistencies that evoke joy and excitement. From a slime step-and-repeat to a slime waterfall, and everything in between, this is worth checking out before it is gone!

Children's Museums

According to the Association of Children's Museums, "Children’s museums are places where children learn through play and exploration in environments designed just for them. Reflecting their diverse communities, children’s museums create playful, interactive learning experiences. In an increasingly complex world, children’s museums provide a place where all kids can learn through play with the caring adults in their lives."

Opened just a few years ago, the nearby Westchester Children's Museum is a smaller museum comparatively, but a great destination to spend a couple of hours. They offer offer drop-in science, engineering, arts, and crafts programs throughout the week. Coming soon: a bunch of brand new exhibits, including a whole Makerspace dedicated to older children ages 7 and up that will feature woodwork and other more complex STEAM activities, as well as a Shadow Puppet Theater, a Sound Room, and a new Gift Shop, to name a few.

Moms in our community love Stepping Stones in Norwalk, CT. There is so much to touch and explore for young children including the energy lab, tot town and color coaster. Just outside is a beautiful playground with a lighthouse and small spray area, if you visit on a beautiful day.

Children's museums in general offer a lot of drop-in and scheduled programming so it is worthwhile to check their websites and plan your visits accordingly. Which is your favorite?

Imagine a futuristic wonderland designed just for kids. A world full of endless possibilities and adventure, where kids can explore and experiment with advanced, cutting-edge technology. A place where today’s kids invent tomorrow.

Introducing Codeverse, the world’s first fully interactive coding studio for kids ages 6-13. Opening at The Westchester this summer, Codeverse will be offering weeklong summer camps, weekday coding classes, and weekend parties.

Codeverse's ~3,000 sq ft space at The Westchester will boast a wide range of high-tech features contributing to a completely immersive and collaborative learning environment. The studio will be riddled with cutting-edge gadgets, including a 20ft TV wall and professional-grade lights and speakers, which can be programmed by kids using real code!

Codeverse teaches kids how to code using KidScript - a proprietary language that enables children to build mobile games, projects and apps, as well as program dozens of objects within the state-of-the-art studio. KidScript draws inspiration from, and acts as a gateway to, many other languages, including JavaScript, Ruby, Python and Visual Basic.

Who teaches kids how to code at Codeverse?
All Codeverse camps and classes are led by Guides.

Guides are a collective of K-12 certified teachers, improv comedians, seasoned designers, engineers and game developers. This diverse mix of backgrounds, skill-sets, and experiences creates a dynamic, fun, and engaging learning environment for the children.

Guides are equipped with iPads that display real stats on how every student is progressing through the curriculum. Tracking every interactive, milestone, and mistake gives Codeverse Guides an unprecedented amount of rich data that is then used to craft a personalized approach to learning to code.
