Museums & Aquariums for Westchester Kids: The Must-Have List

1/15/2020

Picture
New York Aquarium
Dinosaurs, planets, trains, masterpieces, sharks, illusions, ice cream, water experimentation... these are just a few things your child can experience and learn about at nearby museums and aquariums in Westchester County, NY.

When the weather is not conducive to outdoor activities, museums and aquariums are a hands-on, real-life way to engage your child in learning and fun. Museums are always changing exhibits so there is always something new to see. With some of the best museums in the world in our backyard, we are very fortunate. Kids can enjoy playrooms, maker labs, world-renown art and science exhibits, touch tanks, planetariums and so much more.

One concern parents have about museums is that they can get expensive. Here are some ideas to keep costs low, while keeping your child's spirits high!

Tips to Enjoy Museums For Less

Picture
Here are some tips to enjoy museums without breaking the bank:
  • Become a Museum Member- Museums offer memberships which can be cost-effective if you plan to visit multiple times in a year. This can be huge if there is a museum nearby that your child enjoys again and again. There are typically other perks to memberships like special exhibit access, food & parking discounts and guest passes.
  • Invest in a Reciprocal Membership- Reciprocal memberships give you free or discounted admission to a number of attractions, which is a great way to see a lot on a budget. For example, The Association of Children's Museums Reciprocal Network gives discounted admissions to a vast list of member museums across the US and Canada- a great way to see a lot, especially when traveling. Learn more about  reciprocal programs and see a comprehensive list here.
  • Visit your library- Did you know that local Westchester County libraries offer museum passes that provide free or discounted admissions to local museums in Westchester, Connecticut and New York City? Offers vary by library so contact yours and find out what's available.
  • Museums for All- Through Museums for All, people receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) can gain free or reduced admission to more than 400 museums throughout the US.
  • Do Your Research to Find Freebies- Many museums offer free admission to young children. Must Read: Keep Your Money: How to Get in Free at 20 NYC Museums. And even better, here is a list of 19 Awesome Museums in NYC That Are Totally Free.

New & Coming Soon Museums

Hot off the press!

The only borough in New York City without a children’s museum will be getting one this year. The Bronx Chidren's Museum will be geared toward young children, especially those children and families who are not typically able to visit a museum.

The Museum of Ice Cream opened in late fall 2019 and features imaginative, multi-sensory installations that bring to life guests’ delightful dreams: savor the sweetest treats on a floating table, slide down an epic three-story slide, see a spectacular hall of giant scoops, and follow the sound of a buzz that will lead you to a giant “Queen Bee hive. Tickets include ice cream tastings and signature treats.

Open until April 2020, the Sloomoo Institute is a
sensory playground centered around slime. The unique museum provides an engaging slime experience with a variety of textures, colors and consistencies that evoke joy and excitement. From a slime step-and-repeat to a slime waterfall, and everything in between, this is worth checking out before it is gone!

Children's Museums

According to the Association of Children's Museums, "Children’s museums are places where children learn through play and exploration in environments designed just for them. Reflecting their diverse communities, children’s museums create playful, interactive learning experiences. In an increasingly complex world, children’s museums provide a place where all kids can learn through play with the caring adults in their lives."

Opened just a few years ago, the nearby Westchester Children's Museum is a smaller museum comparatively, but a great destination to spend a couple of hours. They offer offer drop-in science, engineering, arts, and crafts programs throughout the week. Coming soon: a bunch of brand new exhibits, including a whole Makerspace dedicated to older children ages 7 and up that will feature woodwork and other more complex STEAM activities, as well as a Shadow Puppet Theater, a Sound Room, and a new Gift Shop, to name a few.

Moms in our community love Stepping Stones in Norwalk, CT. There is so much to touch and explore for young children including the energy lab, tot town and color coaster. Just outside is a beautiful playground with a lighthouse and small spray area, if you visit on a beautiful day.

Children's museums in general offer a lot of drop-in and scheduled programming so it is worthwhile to check their websites and plan your visits accordingly. Which is your favorite?

The Must-Have List of Music Classes, Centers & More for Westchester Kids

12/12/2019

Picture
According to Music Together, "The effects of music on children are magical. Music can be both energizing and calming, and it can enhance bonding and help with transitions."

Music can be enjoyed and learned at any age. In fact, Unicef refers to music as the "The soundtrack to your child's development."  The benefits of music for children are impressive, according to the the United Nations’ organization for children. Music can:
  • Improve moods and empower young children by reducing stress levels. Even listening to sad music can be good thanks to its cathartic power, making it easier for children to get in touch with their emotions.
  • Stimulate the formation of brain chemicals such as dopamine and oxytocin. When these are released, children are encouraged to share toys, empathize and trust others.
  • Boost concentration skills and productivity.
  • Improve learning and grades.
  • Develop spatial intelligence – laying the ground for an interest in mathematics, engineering, computer science and architecture.
  • Improve vocabulary and creativity.

With so much positive impact, it is no surprise that Westchester County is rich in music experience and education options for children at any age. Read this Must-Have List of Music Classes, Centers & More for Westchester Kids to find a location and curriculum that is right for your family. Included are classes for infants through adulthood. Start with mommy-and-me classes to bond musically with your baby. In toddlerhood and preschool, introduce them to toddler-friendly instruments and teach them how to make their own music through voice, rhythm and percussion. When they are older, voice and instrument lessons can give them the tools to boost confidence, creativity, patience and perseverance. Plus, group music classes, orchestra and band provide social benefits as well. Are you ready to get started?

Musical Instrument & Voice Instruction

Picture
Learning to play a musical instrument can improve mathematical learning, improve long-term memory, lead to better brain development, and even increase school scores. Playing an instrument is a rich and complex experience. It integrates information from the senses of hearing, vision, and touch. Plus, in a world of overachievers, playing an instrument can actually be a stress reliever! Performances can provide a goal to work toward, confidence and achievement for children.

Singing is an excellent outlet for self-expression. Plus it aids learning, brain and language development. It can also have social benefits if your child participates in signing competitions, concerts or performs with a group.

Each of these music schools have a unique range of offerings including private lessons, group lessons, e-lessons, band, summer or vacation camps, musical theater, singing, concerts, college prep and more. They differ in their  teaching methods and instrument types as well.

D.I.Y. Slime

2A East Avenue, Larchmont, NY
Picture

D.I.Y. Slime in Larchmont is a new, one-of-a-kind experience for kids and families. It allows them to take an hour or so out of their busy lives to sit together and be creative. Where else do you get to have fun making a mess and then get to walk away and let someone else clean up?!

For those parents who may have tried to make slime with their kids but failed, D.I.Y. Slime staff takes the guesswork out it! They walk your child through each step and check in along the way to make sure everyone leaves with a "perfect slime."

Also, it is very important to the owners, Stacey Sarver and Nicole Fiftal, to make it affordable to all families and so they prices start at $10 and go up from there. It also can be an "impulse activity" since there is no reservations needed during drop-in hours; just drop-in, find a seat, and enjoy some creative time with your child. This place is truly a great addition to the Lower Westchester area.

Tig & Peach believes a children’s indoor play space can be fun AND beautiful. In fact, they’ve set out to make it their mission.

This is a place where young kids can get away from the screen time as they refine their little engineering skills by rearranging wheels and tubes on our gigantic magnet wall. Or focus on fun by sliding, climbing, hiding and seeking on our custom designed playground. They’ll use their imagination as they experiment with our pivoting wind tunnel, get creative and make a mess in the art room or take in a good book inside their custom wooden tent. In addition, they have a kitchen and market place center, a tool bench with wooden tools and cars and a dress up corner in their open play space. The art room is constantly revolving each day with different arts and crafts projects. One day they’ll be painting and the next making rocket ships out of boxes. You never know what you’ll find day by day! No matter what your kids are into, they’ll find something fun and exciting at Tig & Peach.

It's open Monday-Friday 9am-6pm and weekends 9am-1pm, so stop in whenever
(weekend afternoons are reserved for birthday parties)!

Open play at Tig & Peach is open for open play ALL DAY 7 days a week. Families and caregivers can drop in anytime for $30 (plus $20 for each additional sibling. Siblings under 9 months are FREE) and play for the entire day. If you plan on using Tig & Peach more than 4 times a month it makes sense to buy a membership which is $129 for 1 child, $209 for 2, and $299 for 3 children. They also include story time and crafting every Monday at 10:30 AM for members only, you will receive 10% off of classes as well as lots of great monthly perks and exclusive to members! If you’d like to take a class at Tig & Peach you will also receive an open play pass for the entire day of the class (if a child takes a class at 10 AM they can leave and come back at 3 PM or whenever they’d like that day).

There are three connected zones to play in: Big Zone with indoor playground equipment, Little Zone with soft play for infants and toddlers and Life Zone where kids can play dress up, drive to the store, take a walk in the park.

While they do offer open gym for $20 a session (see site for additional pricing information for siblings and packs), it only accommodates 20 children at a time so it is recommended you call ahead. In addition, they welcome field trips and offer enrichment groups (ages 3 and up). Should My Dancer Be En Pointe? Don't Risk Your Child's Future - Hear It From the PROS

11/21/2019

Picture
Every young ballerina dreams about dancing on their toes, but when is the right time to start?

Although some give an age that is typical for being ready to go en pointe (opinions range from 10-13), it is something that is very different depending on the dancer. The proper strength and placement is necessary for safely dancing in pointe shoes, so some dancers may be ready later than others of the same age group.

Many schools allow students to begin wearing pointe shoes before they are physically ready. This can be detrimental to the dancer later on, especially since most students are still growing when they begin pointe. If a student starts pointe before they are strong enough, they can easily develop poor habits and even serious injuries.

A dancer ready for pointe should be able to stand in releve in turned out second position and create a straight line from their knees to the balls of their feet, with the arch of their foot not falling below that line. The dancer should be able to easily perform multiple releves on one foot onto a high demi pointe without losing strength in their core, turnout, or compensating placement in their spine and hips.

There are many other signs that teachers look for to determine if a student is ready to start pointe, so it is important to consult with a trusted teacher first. Although it may be hard to hear that your student may not be quite ready, it is always a decision made in the dancer's best interest.

Ice Skating in Westchester County & Nearby

11/20/2019

Picture
Central Park, Photo by Ihor Dvoretskyi on Unsplash
Cold weather has arrived and 'tis the season for ice skating. Indoor rinks are the go-to place for children to learn to skate, play hockey, attend skating camp, have a birthday party and more-- all in a warmer setting than the great outdoors. Most indoor ice rinks have concessions (phew!) and skate rentals. Be sure to check the rink's schedule for open skate times. Perhaps best of all, skating rinks give kids an opportunity to stay active during the colder months, which everyone desperately needs!

On the other hand, outdoor skating rinks offer the magic of the season, with a classic backdrop to take in the authentic Upstate New York winter experience. Photoworthy indeed! Take in some fresh air and get those muscles working. Don't forget your earmuffs and mittens!

What is your favorite place to skate? Share in the comments below or take a selfie and share with us on Instagram!

How Kids Can Break Into STEM Through Robotics

3/27/2019

STEM, while a short, seemingly harmless word on the surface, can present a variety of challenges for any student or parent who is unfamiliar.

Science, technology, engineering, AND math? That’s a lot to cram into such a simple acronym.

If you’ve been wanting to get your kid or teen more involved in STEM, but have been discouraged by any number of roadblocks, we are here to help!

Believe it or not, sparking a passion for STEM and getting a child started along their journey can begin right now—with robotics.

Breaking into STEM through robotics
One of the most effective ways for any child to get going with STEM is through robotics. Thanks to its hands-on nature, the availability of robotics clubs at school, simple robot toys for home, and nearby robotics classes or summer camps, it has never been easier.
PictureImage by iD Tech
Robotics clubs at school
In case you didn’t know, a robotics club is a gathering of students, who after school, will get together to learn and work with - you guessed it - robots. Such clubs typically take place in a school classroom, and are moderated by a member of the teaching staff or school administration.

Clubs sometimes compete at local robotics competitions, where teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to take on opponents in a series of challenges.

The main benefit for those interested in STEM - but unsure of where to begin - is that a robotics club is a relatively easy, low-cost way to get your student involved.

Such clubs help to strengthen your student’s STEM skills, both hard and soft. Creativity and problem-solving are essential in building a 'bot that can overcome obstacles, and your child will have to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions when the robot doesn’t perform as expected.

Last but not least, hanging out with like-minded peers is always beneficial, providing a valuable way for kids to make friends and build their networks.

PictureImage by iD Tech
With robotics toys, at home
Many of today’s “toys” barely resemble the traditional definition of the word thanks to the inclusion of different educational components.

For instance, the SparkFun Inventor’s Kit (SIK) is a great way to get your child started with coding and hardware interaction using the Arduino programming language.

I know what you’re thinking...coding and programming? What does this have to do with robotics? And, I thought this was supposed to be an easy way to get involved?

Well, coding is the underpinning of robotics, providing the instructions a robot needs to read in order to execute actions.

And toys make coding and robotics easy. For example, the SIK includes everything your child needs to complete five in-depth projects consisting of 16 interconnected circuits. These projects teach everything from blinking an LED to reading sensors and more. The culminating project is your child’s very own autonomous robot!

This is just one example of many different available robotics “toys” that are useful in getting kids and teens interested in robotics. LEGO, Cozmo, and VEX are additional options to look into.

At summer camp, with a robotics course
One of the biggest benefits of summer camp is that it allows campers to build a unique interest in something they might not otherwise have a chance to explore.

While many schools don’t offer courses in robotics, summer camps do. They also provide an environment free of pressure, homework, and tests.

Think of a robotics summer camp as a combination of robotics club and school, to an extent, where students get to experience the camaraderie and teambuilding of a club, and the learning aspect of school.

In the end, however, an entirely new experience is created; one that doesn’t really resemble a club or school at all, where kids can explore to their heart’s content, without being bound by curriculum and large, impersonal classrooms.

Instead, they have the freedom to create the projects they want to create, and can receive personalized learning thanks to small class sizes.

Summer camp is a unique venue for growth, allowing kids to become independent and self-confident, while socializing and making new friends, and even learning new skills, like robotics.

Jump-Start Your Child’s Success with Music

8/26/2018

Picture
Did you know studying music can actually make your child smarter? Learning to play an instrument or sing improves overall academic performance, strengthens motor skills and cognition, as well as develops self-motivation, self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. Having a strong foundation in music can positively impact the trajectory of your child’s life. Start early. Start with music!

Music Conservatory of Westchester, voted Best of Westchester’s ‘Best Music School’ for two consecutive years (2017 and 2018), provides the quality music instruction your child needs to jump-start their journey to future success. Starting with its First Notes curriculum for babies and toddlers, and progressing with its Suzuki program and Guitar program for young musicians, opportunities for your child’s best possible start are at the Music Conservatory.

This fall, prospective students and their families are invited to attend and participate in the Conservatory’s Open Houses introducing its updated roster of classes in September!

“Music is all around us, virtually everywhere we go, yet most people listen to music without understanding what they are actually hearing,” Conservatory Dean of Students and Faculty Dr. Douglas Bish explains. “Children who develop a strong sense of musical concepts from their earliest years have a better chance of growing up with confidence, self-motivation, creativity, and other essential skills.”

The Music Conservatory of Westchester prepares children as young as 3 months old for their future through its First Notes sequence, with three levels of classes to begin your child’s musical understanding: Bravo Babies (3 – 18 months), Toddler Tunes (1 ½ - 2 ½ years), and Preschool Prodigies (3 – 4 years). Children explore musical sounds and rhythms, and learn songs from around the world, attending classes with a parent or caregiver.

The Conservatory’s Suzuki programoffers instruction in violin, cello or piano for students ages 4 and up, focusing on the philosophy that “Every Child Can” learn to play an instrument. The Suzuki music training process is based on an equal triangle of support and cooperation between the student, teacher, and parents. Our highly qualified Suzuki teachers train young musicians to become skilled instrumentalists, performers and ensemble players, while developing their motor skills and focusing ability. Our new Guitar Program offers a progressive curriculum on this popular instrument, preparing young students ages 4 and up to specialize in their favorite style of music, whether rock, jazz or classical, when they get to middle school.

No other activity activates both sides of the brain like playing a musical instrument. Giving your child the gift of music at early stages in their brain development provides a positive, creative outlet for your child to grow with.

As part of our inclusive musical community, the Conservatory provides numerous performance opportunities throughout the year for students of all ages. With more than 80 expertly qualified faculty of professional musicians with exceptional academic and performance credentials in their specialized instruments, the Music Conservatory of Westchester truly offers your child the best possible start!
Preparing your child for a successful future starts early. Start with music.

Back to School: How a White Plains Music School is Going to Make Your Life Easier

8/23/2017

Picture
Back to school means back to the grind of shuttling between soccer practice, dance classes, and violin lessons. Luckily, starting this fall, White Plains community music school, the Music Conservatory of Westchester, has carved time out of you and your children’s busy schedules to make life a little easier.

Voted Best of Westchester’s “Best Music School” of 2017, the Music Conservatory of Westchester has been providing music education to Westchester County and the Tri-State area since 1929 will extend its class schedule to seven days per week, offering private lessons on Sundays starting the week of September 4, 2017. Offering classes and lessons every day of the week will accommodate those busy students juggling after-school programs so that music can still be a priority.

“This was a great opportunity to meet the needs of our students,” Jean Newton, Executive Director of the Music Conservatory of Westchester, said. “With today’s families living such busy lives, we feel this is an important expansion for the students and community.”
Picture
The Conservatory maintains a robust schedule of lessons, classes, and ensembles for students to get involved in with instruction for over 25 different instruments and a variety of musical genres. A musical community for the next generation, the Conservatory will also introduce new classes to the overall fall schedule to appeal to the diverse musical interests of its students.

The new fall classes include:
  • Hip-Hop Composition for middle school aged students and older. This program is inspired by the influence of hip-hop on classical music, as seen in Hamilton the Musical on Broadway. “This is our most adventurous offering,” Conservatory Dean Douglas Bish said. “We teach hip-hop using state of the art equipment to produce this music in the best possible way.” Students are taught how to use the Conservatory’s brand new Yamaha Motif XF8 music workstation to create beats and loops inspired by pop and hip-hop hit makers.
  • The Suzuki program that currently includes specialized violin, cello, and guitar instruction, will add piano to its lineup of instruments with weekly private and group lessons as part of the Suzuki philosophy of instruction.
  • Introduction to Rock Band for middle school aged students and older. “This is a movement to expand our jazz/rock/pop offerings with a beginner rock band class,” Dean Bish said.

Picture
Dean Douglas Bish said of the distinctive programs being introduced this fall at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, “We are constantly expanding the offerings of our music programs beyond our classical roots.”

The Music Conservatory of Westchester is making it possible for its students to be prepared with the musical knowledge and skills they need to strike a chord this fall.

5 Reasons to Add a STEM Camp to Your Summer Plans

3/29/2017

Picture
Today’s best STEM summer camps teach science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a fun and engaging way. Kids and teens can learn foundational STEM skills while meeting new friends and building self-confidence.

Trying to decide which summer camps are best for your child? Here are some of the benefits your child can gain from a STEM summer camp:

1. Avoid Summer Brain Drain
Summer brain drain, the term that’s used to describe the fact that many students lose as much as two to three months of math and reading skills each summer, is real. And while certain students are more likely to suffer from brain drain than others, all kids can be impacted by the phenomenon.

STEM summer camps help combat brain drain by keeping students interested and engaged in a variety of topics. Skills like problem-solving, creativity, and if-then thinking encourage kids and teens to think through complex problems and come up with logical solutions. When parents make simple changes like incorporating STEM camps into their summer plans, kids are less likely to suffer from brain drain, and they learn many new skills and ideas.

2. Learn Important New Skills
Speaking of new skills, kids and teens can learn a lot from attending academic camps. In the case of technology, most K-12 schools still don’t adequately teach computer science and other related technology fields. Without the help of summer and afterschool programs, where will kids learn the important tech skills needed to give them an edge in school, college, and future careers?

STEM subjects require students to have a good grasp of foundational concepts that can make them better at many subjects, STEM or otherwise.
Picture
3. Prepare for Our Ever-Changing Future
Studies predict that there will be one million unfilled STEM jobs by the year 2020. By unfilled, they mean that there will be numerous job openings, but not enough qualified individuals to adequately fill them. Now that we know there is a huge occupational gap that needs to be filled, it’s time to start equipping our kids with the skills they need to thrive in our ever-changing world.

People are already talking about how robots could assume many of the roles people work in today. And with the advent of 3D printing and other emerging technologies, it’s hard to imagine what new innovations our world will think up in the next 5-10 years. Attending summer STEM camps helps ensure that your child will be interested and knowledgeable about STEM topics, which can make them more likely to pursue a STEM career in the future.

4. Get Inspired
Summers always seem to fly by, but they still have the power to make a lifelong impact. Everyone remembers summers spent at camp or with relatives or traveling to a different state. So while a summer STEM camp might only last a week or two, it can make a lasting impact on your child. It can help kids get excited about STEM, find a lifelong passion, discover new interests, meet inspiring mentors, and so much more. Studies show that kids who are interested in STEM from an early age are more likely to pursue these subjects later in life.

5. A promotional discount from iD Tech
Although there are many technology summer programs to choose from these days, iD Tech continues to stand out as the nation’s premiere program. One of the key factors in choosing the right camp is convenience. iD Tech has locations at Manhattanville College (with overnight stays available for ages 10 and up) and Sarah Lawrence College (day camp only). You can save $75 on a week of camp with the promo code WNYMOMS (code valid through April 30, 2017).

Plus, iD Tech is the only camp to guarantee its low 8:1 student-to-instructor ratio, even if it means flying a talented instructor across the country to ensure your child receives the personalized instruction they deserve. Factor in the company’s year-round online learning platform, Tech Rocket, and professional tutors, and it’s easy to see why so many parents love iD Tech.

More than 275,000 students have attended iD Tech since 1999. Some alumni go on to work at Google, Apple, or Facebook. Others start their own game studios, launch startups, or found nonprofits. But all have become tech savvy, and the doors of possibility have swung wide open. According to iD Tech students, the fun camp culture, next-level instructors, and innovative curriculum make iD Tech the best camp ever.

Birthday Parties at The Rock Club
Our large and spacious facility at The Rock Club allows us to host all types of events and parties.  Adding climbing to a birthday party will leave you and your guests with a wonderful and memorable experience.  We have plenty of space to accommodate large groups as well as a separate party room for you and your guests to enjoy.

Additionally, The Rock Club is able to host Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs as well.  We have hosted numerous Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs over the years and the feedback could not be better.  Our patrons are always thrilled with the unique experience that climbing brings to their special event.

Lessons
We offer numerous private, semi-private, and group tennis or rock climbing lessons.  If your child is eager to improve their current skill set and take their game to the next level, this is the best choice for them.  Our professional instructors will help your children to excel and advance in their sport.  These programs are designed for those who wish to improve and take their sport seriously.  The vacation mini camps are geared more for those who just want to have fun while the private lessons build on that base and provide the best opportunity for their personal development.

With the winter season fast approaching, we excited to announce that enrollment for winter is open.  We offer a variety of programs depending on your child’s age and skill level.

The New Rochelle Racquet Club offers three basic junior programs: TAUT (Ten and Under Tennis), Junior Programs, and TTP (Tournament Training Program).  Each program is designed to enhance your child’s skill set based on their age and experience.  Whether your child is beginner or seasoned player, we are sure to have a program that suits their needs.

Here is a short video with our TAUT Director Dimitri as he explains what make the New Rochelle Racquet Club TAUT Program so special.

Annual Climbing Competition
We’d also like to announce that we will be holding our yearly climbing competition at The Rock Club in March (exact date TBD).  This is a great opportunity for serious climbers to compete in a great local comp.  This comp will be open to those who are ages 16+.

Plant Nite! A New Night Out in Westchester

8/23/2016

Are you looking for a new, creative experience while getting out and socializing with friends? Have a drink and get your hands dirty with Plant Nite! The sister company of well-established Paint Nite, Plant Nite started one year ago in Boston and has finally arrived in Westchester!

In select restaurants and bars across the county, people 21 and over are guided by a local host while planting their very own terrarium. Plant Nite is creative entertainment that allows people to socialize and drink as they would on a regular night out, but with something new and revolutionary: Plant Nite puts an empty planter, a variety of succulents, and a local gardening enthusiast in the mix to give people a real reason to leave the house. With events featuring hardy succulents, fragrant herb plants and colorful sand art, at Plant Nite the combinations are endless, even if you don’t quite have a green thumb.

But Plant Nite isn’t just about plants, it’s about the experience. It’s a 1.5 hour party where you can enjoy a mojito, spend time with with friends and meet new ones. It’s about getting creative, trying something new and digging in the dirt.

Plant Nite is a local business run and operated by local artists, entertainers and gardeners. It’s hosted by people who are passionate about miniature plants and a good cocktail. Plant Nite is currently hosted at Don Coqui in White Plains, O’Connor’s Public House in Mount Kisco, Uno’s in Yonkers, Rockwells in Pelham and Burkes Bar and Restaurant in Yonkers and is quickly growing. With so many places to choose from, there’s an option for everyone. In addition to public events, Plant Nite also hosts private events!

So when you need a night out to let loose and be creative, you can find your next event here. Remember to use coupon code WestchesterNyMoms for 30% off all your Plant Nite tickets!

10 Things Your Kids Will Love at the Westchester Children's Museum

5/19/2016

Picture
Today my daughter and I had the pleasure of visiting the brand new Westchester Children's Museum located next to Playland in Rye, NY.

As we approached the museum I was filled with excitement. Not only  because Westchester finally has it's own children's museum (hooray!), but also because it is situated in one of Westchester's most extraordinary settings. On one side is the picturesque beach on Long Island Sound and on the other, Playland. Nothing brings on that excited feeling more than seeing a roller coaster, ferris wheel and a stunning beach. Childhood nostalgia at its best!

2. Library Nook- cozy up with a great book with your child(ren). Check out the amazing cereal box collage artwork on the wall from  local renowned pop artist Michael Albert.

3. Toddler Beach- a large soft play area for toddlers. A great spot for parents to relax while the little ones have a blast.
Picture
4. Build Your Own Roller Coaster- mix and match different tracks to create your own unique roller coaster. Stairs help little children reach the top of the hills so that they can place balls on the tracks and watch them go (over and over)!
Picture
5. Wind Tunnel- grab a streamer, cup or paper bowl and watch it fly to the sky! A great way for little ones to learn science while having a blast (yes, over and over).
Picture

6. Magnets- have fun exploring with magnets. Use a handheld magnet and watch the colors on the screen magically change. Or try the floating magnets.
Picture
7. Giant Organ- use magnets and lift the sides of the organ to make it sing. Have fun  pressing different buttons to hear a range of notes.
Picture
8. Shadow Puppet Theater- have fun interacting with shadows and watching them dance.
Picture
9. Keva Planks- build your own train, house, airplane or whatever you can imagine using planks (or have fun watching them tumble  down).

Your Next DIY Obsession: Stretchy Bracelets

5/18/2016

Stretchy bracelets have come back into style for all ages and they are easier than ever to make! Bead Everything is a new bead store in Westchester and they have all the supplies you need to make your own trendy bracelets.  Check out their step by step guide for this bracelet and channel your inner creative-self this Spring!
Here are the materials you will need to make the bracelet:
  • Stretch Magic Stretchy Cord .7mm
  • G.S. Hypo Cement Glue
  • A Pair of Cutters or Scissors
  • A Pair of Flat Nose Pliers
  • Beads- 8mm Semi Precious Stones, Amazonites are used in the demonstration
  • A Charm/Focal Piece. A Sterling Silver Hammered Bar is used in the demonstration
  • A Crimp Cover
  • A Bead Board
Picture

1. The average stretchy bracelet is 7." You will use the top channel on a bead board to measure the length of your design.
Picture
2.    Design away!
Picture
3.  A piece of tape is helpful to use to stop beads from falling off the cord once strung- believe me...it happens more than you'd think!
Picture
4. String the beads onto the cord!
Picture
5. Double check that the bracelet will be long enough to fit your wrist. The bracelet in the photo was too short so I added two more beads to each side. You can remove the tape to do this but be careful your beads don't slip away!
Picture
6. Once the bracelet is at its desired length, you will need to tie two square knots to finish it off.
Picture
7. Put the right end on top of the left end, then tuck the right end under the left end.
Picture
8. Repeat this knot but start with the opposite side than what you started with. Put the left end over the right end.
Picture
9. Tuck the left end over the right end. Now you will see the "square" of the square knot!
Picture
10. Once you see the square, pull very tight! It is unlikely that you will snap the cord.
Picture
11. Use your glue to cover your knots. In a pinch, you can use clear nail polish instead of glue! Wait at least twenty minutes for the glue to set.
Picture
12. Cut the ends off of your bracelet but be careful not to cut the knot!
Picture
13. Crimp Covers are a little piece of metal that kind of looks like a clam shell. They can be used to cover the knot and they appear to be just another bead!
Picture
14. Cover your knot with the crimp cover. If you would like, you can fill the middle of the crimp cover with Hypo-Cement. This glue will bond to the cord and the metal.
Picture
15. Viola! You have just created a beautiful, trendy bracelet.
Picture
This is also a great project to do with kids! Bead Everything has little letter beads and fun colors that kids will love. You can even use wooden beads and Onyx to create a simple bracelet for men.
